Johannesburg - A police officer was killed and another critically injured after being attacked in Dobsonville, Soweto, on Tuesday afternoon, Gauteng community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said.

Nkosi-Malobane, addressing media in Johannesburg on the progress made in police killing cases, said she had to begin the briefing on a sad note.

"Two of our officers were attacked in Dobsonville. One of them was fatally wounded and one is fighting his life as we speak," the MEC said.

"We won't be giving any other details about those officers. Their families have not yet been informed."

Gauteng head of detective services Major General Vincent Leshabane said police were currently on the scene.

"We cannot comment about Dobsonville now, because they are on the scene…We are still investigating," he said.

This latest killing brings the number of police murders in the province over the last three months to nine.

Nkosi-Malobane said the killing of law enforcement officers was not only a "gross denial" of the victim's basic right to life, but also an assault on the right to life of all citizens.
