Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal police constable was jailed for 15 years by the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday for murder and attempted murder, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said.

IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said Hlengiwe Mkhize, 31, was sentenced to 15 years for murder, of which five years were suspended.

Mkhize was also sentenced to five years for four attempted murders.

The sentences would run concurrently, Dlamini said.

Mkhize shot Mlindeli Ngobo, 15, who was with his friends in July last year on Bulwer Road in Taylor's Halt.

"Ngcobo was with four occupants in the car when he accidentally bumped Mkhize's car," Dlamini said.

The two agreed to report the accident to police but Mkhize fired two shots at Ngcobo's car and hit him in the head.

He died later in hospital.

Mkhize opened a case of attempted hijacking after the accident and alleged that she had shot Ngcobo in self-defence.

"The IPID welcomes the sentence as it sends a message to police officers that they will be held accountable by the criminal justice system of our country if they misuse their firearms and authority," Dlamini said.
