Johannesburg - A 20-year-old man was jailed for 32 years by the Western Cape High Court on Friday for murdering a police officer, the City of Cape Town said.

Sandisile Mcapayi was convicted of murdering officer Mpumelelo Hubert Xakekile on 10 October  2012, safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said in a statement.

Xakekile was issuing a fine to a motorist at the intersection of Lansdowne Road and Mew Way, when Mcapayi and the other man emerged from nearby bushes and opened fire on him.

"Officer Xakekile was 50 years old at the time of his death and married with one child. He had been a committed member of the city’s law enforcement agencies for 10 years," said Smith.

Xakekile was also a member of the metro police tactical response unit.

The sentence included 20 years' for murder, eight for possession of an illegal firearm, and two for possession of illegal ammunition.

"We have waited for justice in this case for just over two years and while this development will not bring back officer Xakekile, I hope it brings closure for his family, friends and colleagues," said Smith.

"The tragedy of his death is compounded by the fact that another life is at risk of being lost too. I can only hope that the young man responsible for this reprehensible act finds rehabilitation behind bars."

He hoped the case would send out a strong signal to those who thought they could target officers of the law.
