Cop killings concern Phiyega

2013-01-09 16:00

Johannesburg - Police commissioner Riah Phiyega expressed concern about police killings on Wednesday after an officer was shot dead in a robbery.

"He is the first SA Police Service casualty... in 2013," she said in a statement.

She believed the possession of illegal firearms was contributing to police killings.

Phiyega urged community formations to mobilise, remain vigilant and continue to supply the police with information which would help them to deal with illegal firearms.

Sergeant Molahlehi Ephraim Mokhasi, 41, was killed in a robbery in Kopanong on Tuesday.

Four gunmen robbed a shop shortly before 14:00. The police arrived while they were trying to flee, so they ran back into the shop. They re-emerged guns blazing. The sergeant was shot and died on the scene.

The robbers ran off with cash, a laptop, and a police service pistol.

Police confronted the robbers again 2km away.

A female constable from the Bloemfontein dog unit was wounded in the leg and hand. A third bullet struck her bullet-proof vest. Another police officer was shot in the hand.

A gunman was killed, and a second was arrested. Another gunman was arrested on Wednesday.

The two, aged 28 and 19, were expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday, on charges of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.

" Police commissioner Riah Phiyega expressed concern about police killings on Wednesday after an officer was shot dead in a robbery." And while you are concerned about police killings, im worried that you are not qualified for the job

Does the commissioner have concern for the Farm Killings ??

      Tuyez - 2013-01-09 17:05

Probably she is concerned about all the sort of crime in the country plus farm robberies that sometimes end in the farmers being killed. This sort of crimes happen in rural areas where police stations are kilometers away and places of safety.

National police commissioner Riah Phiyega has recently promised that specialised rural protection units will be introduced – and South Africa's main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, has pledged to keep her to that promise. Read more:

Worry about police who kill their partners and commit suicide.

Listening to Gen R Phiyega speaking, she does strike me as a clueless leader!

Is it totally inconceivable that because our population is so 'bloated'(way too many people) that certain segments of the population are trying to get into the prison system where they at least get the benefits of food, a roof and 1st class medical attention. I overheard a converstaion at the flower market earlier that went like this and I am afraid I have to translate from the local vernacular......'I can't believe he spent 20 years in jail, and in his first month out he finds work...!!' Does this mean he studied, acquired skills etc that made him more employable. I would rather see tax money being spent on upskilling innocent people than being wasted on people who have proven to be anti-social and therefore undesirable in the ideal world we want to create.

wht bt the police officer who killed himself n d girlfriend in Limpompo yesterday.

  • Sige Gorabeb - 2013-01-09 16:38

Emotions in the republic are so high for varying reasons that it's almost impossible to have a proper, civil debate on issues. The comments on what the police commissioner said are a good point in case. Where do we start to rectify the problem?

Justice system should change... coz by tomorrow those thugs they will get bail. And serve lesser sentence....

Well done to our peace officers doing a dangerous job! Do more training to shoot straight. THIS is where you shoot to kill to defend your lives! ALL the robbers should be wounded or dead!

Yet this heartless and probably mindless individual, (I'm trying really hard to be PC here), laughs at the murdered miners and their families at Marikana

  • John - 2013-01-09 17:54

PHIYEGA's only concern is the safety of private lives and private property! That is the sole purpose of a PEACE OFFICER. Train your MEMBERS better, in fact get yourself TRAINED so that you know what you are talking about!

after watchng 3rd degree episode yrstdy where cop were abusing innocent people i dont care. Cops are like thugs them selves.

  • EricksonTL - 2013-01-09 18:39

Interestingly, a police uniform does not create a force field around officers. When you send out poorly trained, poorly armed cops into situations where there is risk, they have a good chance of getting hurt or killed. Where's the concern for innocent people being murdered because the cops are inept and incapable?

      EricksonTL - 2013-01-09 18:41

Privatise all government services, and reduce tax. The cops are useless anyway, and private citizens have to pay ADT et al anyway. If the cops budget is based on performance, you'd quickly see them pull up their socks, and better cops means safer cops.

i wonder how many police officers are shot with the same firearms that goes missing from police stations!Corrupt cops sell the firearms to criminals and then their hard working collegs get killed.

  • samgaf - 2013-01-09 19:08

First and proberly not the last for 2013.You are arming and sending kids to do a mans job and they end up even shooting themselves.

  • mmoledis - 2013-01-09 19:20

It is high time now that the police should do what they have been taught at the college with regard to how to attend criminal scenes,I trained as a police officer at Cape Town police training college so so far what I have seen on the roads of this country and on crime scenes police are do opposite to what they have been taugt on how to attend and approach crime scenes as most of them that is why they get hurt,if they can start practicing policing basics they will safe their lifes big time. For example,I saw a police van stopping a car they suspect on the road and their approach to that car was not good at all for their safety, because they just stopped behind that car close and come out going to the alleged suspected car without anyone of them giving protection and all drills to do when stopping a car were not followed, lucky those people were not criminals if they were it was going to be a disaster if after those police van stopped behind them and start opening fire to them, taking cover for them for their safety was not adequate as they were vulnerable. So there are lot of scenes I have seen by police not doing the basics,so I then think it is time like in the Defence force, police service start re training their police every year in order to keep them fit and mind right to attend to scenes,as that is for their own safety too, and also police in stations are not safe because everyone can enter police stations in this country as they wish without being searched at the gate.

  • mmoledis - 2013-01-09 19:33

For the safety of police and citizens, let the government give police total powers to exercise maximum force in such crime scenes because asking for orders from higher command while criminals enjoy is not gonna help police combat crime, because once they can open fire there and kill or wound someone the state instead of congadulating that police in fighting crime will start investigating that police officer and if possible arrest him for fighting crime,so let government not protect criminals, criminals should be attended to by police in a harsh manner so that they think twice before going to do those crimes, otherwise our police force will just be a service without any functions,a dog without teeth. Let president forgive Bheki Cele and reinstate him to that post, then we will see that criminals are attended to properly by the police and crime will be lowered same time,he is not a general by mistake as I saw him personally in Soshanguve patroling with police and on that they they caught people selling marijuana and some drugs at Mabopane station,so a general should lead by example too, attend crime scenes in some stages to feel how officers on the ground are feeling.

  • nyikamn - 2013-01-09 20:15

Cop killings is bad really unacceptable but Phiyega have you noticed how in the past few months your guns have been pointed on innocent people ( domestic violence). That is an issue to ponder . And most of those guns in the hands of criminals are coming from your artillery .

  • Ntshobs - 2013-01-09 20:36

Criminals don't manufacture guns Phiyega, moemish.

These are the scenes that u should assign to amaberet to showcase their brutality.we are being harrassed every single weekend by amaberet for public drinking.anyway im not surprised that the officer got killed, he probably failed the shooting range just like most officers did, about 40% of our police officers fail shooting range.
