THERE is a new constable in town and he is on a mission to bring the community and the SAPS closer together.

Pietermaritzburg’s new communication officer Constable Mthokozisi Ngobese, who was born in Howick, started his journey as a policeman in 1996 after a tragic murder in his family led him to the SAPS.

“My mother was shot and killed in her home in Howick and to date I have not heard a word from the investigating officer about the case.

“I saw there was a problem in the SAPS and I knew I needed to be part of the solution. I wanted the community to be able to communicate with the police and have them know what was going on in their cases,” he said.

After the murder of his mother, Ngobese volunteered his services to the police for eight years before he was enlisted as a member of the SAPS.

“I was not paid because they could not employ me, but I just wanted to help where I could.”

When Ngobese was enlisted, he started in the social crime prevention unit and worked closely with the community, keeping them up to date with their cases.

“I then went on to communication and I feel I am in the right place.”

He said his aim as Pietermaritzburg’s new communication officer is to repair the relationship between communities and the police through projects where police interacted with the communities in and around the city.

Ngobese said the police will be interacting with schools throughout next week for Child Protection Week.

“We will be going to talk to schools and give parents and children tips and advice on how to protect themselves,” he said.

Ngobese, a “family man of sober habits”, said a passion of his is holding marriage workshops for police and their partners in a bid to end domestic violence between officers and their families.

“I hold marriage seminars for SAPS members to help resolve any issues they may have before it ends in violence.

“A policeman cannot be a custodian of the law if he commits domestic violence.”

Ngobese said when he is not preaching, holding seminars or at the church, he is at home. “I spend most of my time with my wife.”

He said he supports Orlando Pirates but his secondary team is Maritzburg United.

“I attend all their games.”

Talking about areas that need to be looked at and worked on by the police, Ngobese said Matsheni Beer Hall is a problem. However, the Pietermaritzburg cluster commander Major-General Lucas Ngubeni is working hard to combat the issues that come with the hall.

“There is a problem with mugging in Jika Joe as well as Loop Street and East Street. People need to be careful when walking in these areas.”

Ngobese said he is here to stay and available to the community should they have issues they want to discuss with the police
