Johannesburg - A man reported to be a police captain was shot and critically wounded at his Roodepoort, Johannesburg, home on Tuesday morning, paramedics said.

The shooting happened around 02:00 in Strubensvalley, Netcare911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said in a statement.

"A 37-year-old man is in a critical condition following a shooting incident in Strubensvalley in Roodepoort in the early morning hours.

"Netcare 911 paramedics received the call for assistance at around 02.20am this morning and upon arrival on scene they found the injured man had sustained a critical gunshot wound following the shooting incident."

Steinmann did not have more details and police were not immediately available to confirm an EyewitnessNews report that the wounded man was a police captain.

He was reportedly shot outside his house when he went to investigate noises he heard.

"The Netcare1 helicopter was activated to airlift the critically injured man to hospital for the urgent medical care that he required."
