Johannesburg - A police officer died in hospital on Friday after being shot in the eye on Thursday during a chase with suspected robbers in Norkem Park, Ekurhuleni, said Gauteng police.

Constable Mashudu Munga, 34, from Alexandra police station, died as a result of his injuries on Friday morning, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

Five robbers were being chased by police when they opened fire. A shoot-out ensued, and the officer was hit in the eye, said Dlamini.

The five were suspected of holding up a family in the area and stealing jewellery and cellphones.

And crime is down according to a survey? Bring back the death penalty!

      procold2 - 2011-11-25 13:31

its the only way and fast justice ,not all these appeals and delays, investigate, charge, court and sentence like in a week and if the sentence is death in the case of violent crime should happen the following week and then you will see the real drop in the crime rate ,these animals have no respect for themselves, the law or anything else.

Jack this article is about a brave cop who gave his life for our safety. If you can't find it in you to wish his family condolences then don't, we really don't need a diatribe about the rest of the force. You comment is based on absolute stereotyping and irrelevant to this particular article. You are most unkind!

@ DanielD he was brave to you not to many of us. May be the family is also relieved that he is gone

      Mike - 2011-11-25 15:08

Not as relieved as we will be when you are gone

Death sounds like fairytale from distance. When it strikes at your family you'd start to realise how stealthy is this fate. There are people who underrate someone's death simply because s/he is black or white. Death is the great leveller and no race or tribe will elude this fate. "Unto Dust". Vha adele nga mulalo.

RIP to the member and may his family have all the support they need. And my thoughts are with the family and friends of the two members from Alex who happened to be in the wrong place on Wednesday evening when an ATM was bombed. Tragically i have just heard the one member has also passed away.
