Johannesburg - A policeman and another man were wounded in a shoot-out in Benoni on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

"In the early hours of this morning in Benoni, members of the tactical response unit were following information about a suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm," said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

When they arrived at the man's shack, police were fired at and returned fire.

The policeman was wounded in his right upper leg while the man who shot at police was wounded in both legs.

Police found two other men in the shack and arrested all three.

The wounded man was taken to hospital under police guard.

A firearm was confiscated at the scene.

The men are to be charged with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

They were expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate's Court.
