Cope 'anguished' at Chabane's untimely death

Johannesburg - The Congress of the People on Sunday expressed shock at the news of the death of the Minister of Public Service and Administration Collins Chabane in a car accident.

"[Cope] is shocked at the untimely death of Collins Chabane in a motorcar accident this morning," it said in a statement.

"He was a hard-working and well-respected Minister. We feel a deep sense of anguish at his being taken away from us so unexpectedly."

Chabane and two of his bodyguards were killed instantly when a truck did a U-turn in front of their car on the N1 near Polokwane.

The accident happened at around 01:00 on Sunday.

"Cope expresses its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, the president, Cabinet colleagues and the ANC."

President Jacob Zuma was shocked by Chabane's death.

"We are deeply shocked and saddened by this untimely death of an outstanding cadre of our liberation struggle and a competent, accomplished and dependable member of my Cabinet," said Zuma.

"This is a huge loss to government and the country as a whole."
