Cope hosts night vigil for Mandela

2012-12-26 12:05

Johannesburg - Members of the Congress of the People in Johannesburg held a night vigil at the Pretoria hospital on Christmas eve to pray for former president Nelson Mandela's speedy recovery, the party said on Wednesday.

The hospital's staff and patients were among those who joined Cope members in the event, said councillor Preddy Mothopeng.

"We prayed, sang both Christmas and revolutionary songs with candles, while we wished him and others [patients] a speedy recovery, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year," said Mothopeng.

President Jacob Zuma said Mandela was "looking much better" and in high spirits on Tuesday.

He said in a statement that he had visited the former statesman to wish him a merry Christmas.

"He was happy to have visitors on this special day and is looking much better. The doctors are happy with the progress that he is making," Zuma said.

"We found him in good spirits. He shouted my clan name, Nxamalala, as I walked into the ward."

'A blessed nation'

Zuma said Mandela's family had been appreciative of the support they had received from the South African public.

"That is what keeps them going at this difficult time," Zuma said.

Mandela spent Christmas Day in hospital in Pretoria, having been flown there from his Eastern Cape home at Qunu on December 8.

He was diagnosed with a lung infection and also underwent gallstone surgery.

His current stay in hospital is his longest since he was freed over two decades ago.

Mothopeng said the party was grateful to the nation and to the international community for being in solidarity with them towards Mandela's speedy recovery.

"South Africa is a blessed nation because of its diversity and a great nation because of leaders such as Tata Madiba," he said.

Poor old soul, and after a lifetime of sacrifice, he has to watch his country and its people trampled into the dust by the likes of zuma. It must break the old man's heart.

      monica.borrageiro - 2012-12-26 12:30

True that Jenny. This man fulfilled his purpose on earth and that was to free his people from an oppressive power, and for that he sacrificed 27 years of his youth, yet still came out of jail a smiling, humble, forgiving man with heart for EVERYONE, and until today remains the same. His spirit changed the hearts of millions of people all over the world and God has blessed him with a long happy life. If we ALL learnt by his example, how much more would our country not be blessed.

      themba.thwala.775 - 2012-12-26 12:33

Well stated Jenny. And guess what their response will be if he were to speak out against them? Counter-revolutionary, blah x 1000. I would hold my peace if I were him instead of give fools and opportunity to drag me to their level and into the gutter. atheitis, can you pray to your satan to do something different perhaps?

  • goyougoodthing - 2012-12-26 12:23

What hospital, where is he, where are pictures of him?

      mabeeden - 2012-12-26 12:47

Its so important to try and keep utmost privacy about his whereabouts and I agree - no photos. Let this dear man have privacy, respect and dignity during this time. If the world knew exactly where he was the press and people would rush there and could seriously compromise the ability of staff to perform their duties for ALL patients. Dear Madiba does not need photos of himself at an advanced and weak state spread over the world.

      Twolips - 2012-12-26 13:44

Ask a COPE member. They were there.

  • thabo.manganye - 2012-12-26 12:59

Hope there is no hidden agenda but if done with a noble heart, even the D.A can do the same I mean after all he is a peoples person hence we now seeing his face every time we open our wallets or visit the atm. I also wish him well but at the same time saying let Gods will prevail

      sonia.swarts - 2012-12-26 13:35

Thabo, agreed. I think it is possibly the hidden agenda that concerns people. This new Mr. Fix it approach and praying is very suspect to everybody! Praying to God when in need isn't religion it is where people go and what they do right at the end when the realization sets in that only God can still help thus acknowledging Gods almighty! As for the DA understand that they like every other citizen of this country only wants what is best for this country as we do. We don't want all this killing and poverty! We as a nation I am sure would like to be known as the only country in Africa that made it. Living in peace and working for our families. Mandela is a icon no matter how you look at him. We all need to respect that his time is near. We have all walked a million miles to come to this point.

      Livvi Krige - 2012-12-26 14:59

Well said Thabo. I for one would be heartbroken should Madiba pass on, and thus send special thoughts to this incredible man, but let God's will prevail!!
