Durban - A man understood to be a prolific car thief, who uses the alias "Condom", was bust after leading police on a high-speed chase through Morningside in Durban on Tuesday.

Two others who were in the getaway car with "Condom" were also nabbed when Durban Dog Unit officers reined them in.

It is unclear how the man acquired his strange moniker.

Two police sources with knowledge of the incident, who could not be named as they are not authorised to speak to the media, said that officers had noticed a "suspicious vehicle" and followed it.

"The officers saw the men in the car throw an object out of the window and then speed off in the Morningside area. The officers decided to give chase. Other police officers who had stopped searched the vicinity and found an unlicensed firearm and a radio wave scanner programmed with police frequencies," a source said.

The men are understood to have been stopped by police before giving themselves up.

"When the car was searched, the officers found a range of implements used for housebreaking and car theft," the source added.

"'Condom' is notorious and he knows how to work the system, and the same goes for his two cohorts. It is good that they are off the street for now," he said.

Police spokespersons were not immediately available for comment.
