Cops due in court after suspect dies

Pretoria - Four policemen will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of murder and assault, the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) said.

Three constables and a captain stationed at Diepsloot police station and the Honeydew detective service allegedly assaulted 28-year-old Richard Mahlangu on Sunday, said spokesperson Moses Dlamini.

The officers allegedly arrested Mahlangu and started assaulting him and two other people around midnight. They then drove off with Mahlangu in an open bakkie, said Dlamini.

A few hours later, he was found lying dead in the parking area at the Diepsloot police station.

The IDC launched an investigation after it was informed of the incident, said Dlamini.

"An identification parade was held after which the suspects were arrested by the ICD's investigators," he said.

"The policemen, aged 46, 31, 32 and 33, were arrested with a civilian who managed to escape after being identified in the ID parade. He is currently being traced."

I think Mr Mthethwa has his work cut out for him, because it seems there are only tsotsis in his police force.

How do you escape from an ID parade? Is that not done at a police station?

This is the second time this week!I cant stand the sight of our police..they are criminals with license...the do as they please.I despise the lot of them. They are corrupt, they rape, kill, abuse power and get away with it all the time!

      Sunett - 2012-02-17 08:30

Agreed! It's getting more and more difficult to drive past them without snarling. There have been so many articles lately about police incompetence, brutality and stupidity. I sound like a broken record, I know, but people - we are screwed!

There's as many criminals serving in the police, as is out on the streets. Must be thanks to the ANC and their MK cadres

  • Sharon - 2012-02-17 08:38

How do they recruit these hooligans? Do they pick them up off the street? Is nepotism the culprit here? What training are they given? I must admit, I am as afraid of the cops as I am of the bad people, because I am having trouble telling them apart. The only difference between them is that the cops wear uniforms and are allowed to carry guns!

  • Khomotso - 2012-02-17 08:39

They must be put int the same cell as the thugs they have arrested

  • Andre - 2012-02-17 08:50

Many criminals actually join the police 'force" with the intention to do crime "under cover". Selection and training is pathetic. And as for discipline, we'll say no more.....

.... they must stop thinking that they are judge jury and executioner !!!! they are ONLY supposed to "protect and serve" --- their motto .... but they dont give a damn about that .... they are killers in uniform !!!

  • Warwick - 2012-02-17 10:01

Filthy stinking thugs. Sue the living blazes out of the minister and his thug police force. Trust a cop at your own peril. Nothing but scum in uniform with a licence to kill and maim.
