Cops fire rubber bullets after fatal beer crash

2011-12-06 14:05

East London - A man was killed and six other people were seriously injured on Tuesday in a three-vehicle crash near Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, police said.

A truck loaded with beer bottles and travelling on the N2 from East London collided head-on with another truck carrying shoes and coming from Butterworth at about 06:00, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

A car then rammed into the back of the liquor truck. The driver of the beer truck, believed to be in his mid-30s, died on the scene.

"Local residents stole beers and shoes from the wrecks of the vehicles," Manatha said.

"Police fired rubber bullets at the crowd and recovered some of the liquor."

No one was wounded in the shooting. Those injured in the accident were admitted to different East London hospitals. A culpable homicide docket was opened.

Thugs through and through, everywhere! Opportunist hooligans as a society!

      Shadoz66 - 2011-12-06 14:59

You all so quiek to say "Hooligans or vultures" but if you have nothing and wake up in the middle of a location with the prospect of never amounting to much then we can talk again.

      duane.vanvuuren - 2011-12-06 15:13

@ Shadoz66: You don't take what doesn't belong to you, mate. Simple!

      Marion - 2011-12-06 15:27

@Shadoz66 - I can still understand that they may have needed shoes. But what the hell did they steal the beer for? To ensure that they will never amount to anything 'cos they enjoy drinking too much?

      Fatty - 2011-12-06 16:18

Funny how all you high and mighty, bigoted whiteys acuse black folks for looting. About 7 years ago a beer truck overturned at Rondebosch in the wee hours on Main Rd, 90% of the looters/cleaners there were white UCT students. One of them was a friend of mine who lived nearby. I didn't say no to a few cases of beer he offered me, because I wouldn't pay a cent for SAB-Miller's cat-piss any way! Lest be said, it's one thing to steal off an individual, or to not help an injured person. But to steal an insured truck's contents owned by one of the richest beverage corporations in the world, who attained most of their wealth by intoxicating the poor in the first place, I wouldn't hesitate at the opportunity, and neither would many other (reasonable) folks out there...

      Donovan - 2011-12-06 20:45

Yeah, Fatty, you'd do that while dead people lie in the truck. You belong in South Africa, don't you.

      Nibiru - 2011-12-07 07:00

@Fatty When you sampled the feline's urine did you drink it from a glass or straight from the tap?

These days you can't even use the word unbelievable.

  • Comrade - 2011-12-06 14:29

Eastern Cape is the SOMALIA of South Africa - A HUGE MESS..!!!

      Cindy - 2011-12-06 14:54

It pains me to agree Com, but I must. I live in the EC and I hang my head in shame every time my fellow ECers do stuff like this....... we are always hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons, I dream of a day when the headlines scream "80% matric pass rate in EC" but continually live with "80% of matriculants fail in EC"....

  • Maai - 2011-12-06 14:30

"Police fired rubber bullets at the crowd and recovered some of the liquor" and then proceeded to drink it.

      Bob - 2011-12-06 15:12

@Maai Do you have evidence to substantiate your statement or is this just your effort to discredit all police personnel even those that are doing a good job??? Just asking.

      Yusuf - 2011-12-06 15:15

no bob,he does not.he is simply telling you what he would do if he was a cop

      Maai - 2011-12-06 15:21

@Yusuf nope wrong you I dont drink alcohol, but for different reasons.

      Yusuf - 2011-12-06 15:22

how do you know what i do and dont do

  • Chimene - 2011-12-06 14:35

Heartless people!some1 died,n u prefer stealing. They didn't steal bcz they r poor but bcz they r stupid.

      Marion - 2011-12-06 14:45

Sadly robbing people who have been in accidents seems to be a common pastime, even in cities like Johannesburg where people have had their cellphones, handbags etc., stolen. May the driver who died RIP.

      SNG62 - 2011-12-06 15:00

      Chimene - and u spell so bad bcz u r stupid 2! :)

We live in a sick world... Know of many people who were robbed after being in car accidents. People come in and pull out the radio, steal whatever they can, but dont call an ambulance... Its not just Eastern Cape or South Africa. We live in a sick world... Yes there is a lot of good in this world, but loads of cr@p too... RIP to those who didn't survive and get well soon to those that were injured. Oh, and one Wicked hangover to those who stole the liquor!!!!

  • Steve - 2011-12-06 14:57

'Scenario' Beer Truck overturns on Rivonia off ramp. Police fire rubber bullits at motorists to stop them looting. The whole world's press would be there filming.

      Ntshwana - 2011-12-06 21:23

Well, let them film! It's not like the world (Europe, Ozie, NZ & US) are gonna invest anything in this country! They aren't interested because they have their own economic problems! We don't give a hoot...damn, scarecrow!!

  • Irene - 2011-12-06 14:57

They'd rather steal before even trying to help those injured in the accident. Disgusting!

  • Kaizer - 2011-12-06 15:00

The nature of these "people" comes to the fore more and more these days....

      sechaba.lenong - 2011-12-07 09:50

Rather use "our" people instead of "these" people. That's what most whites fail to understand. When you translate it to native language, its really rude. Unless if you intentionally trying to offend our people.

  • Nick - 2011-12-06 15:03

That's a pretty desperate (or callous) move by the beer and shoe thieves...

      Warren - 2011-12-06 23:09

@ Ntshwana: I'm with you my bra-dah!!! The sooner we catch & deport those Zama-Zamas from Lesotho the better!!! Those Bass-Teds must stop undermining us!!!

  • Gert - 2011-12-06 15:08

The cops was too drunk to hit them as they recovered some of the liquor, at least the perpetrators had shoes to run away with....LOL

  • johan.j.kotze - 2011-12-06 15:12

Im working on the roads on a daily basis in the disaster management field. I have seen people stealing accidentvictims watches, cellphones and all other valuables, even stripping their clothes and shoes off as they were laying there dying. This is the lowest form of life. They are vultures with no reason for being on this earth

      Marion - 2011-12-06 15:24

My only consolation in all of that is 'what goes around comes around'. I'm a firm believer in that. One day they too will need aid for whatever reason and will be robbed blind just as they have robbed others instead of trying to assist.

      DieSeL - 2011-12-06 16:09

@ Johan - Even taking their clothes?? WTF?????? I take my hat off to those who work in the field of emergency response and the likes. I wouldn't be able to deal with those scenes. Its really sad that this is what years of evolution have amounted to... I agree with Marion, What goes around comes around. It may not be in the form of them being robbed when they in need of help but it will come back in some form or another. As they say "Karma"

  • mikeangell61 - 2011-12-06 15:12

I work on the roads and at these accident scenes on a daily basis. I have seen people ripping the watches off dying victim's arms, stealing their cellphones and other valuables. I have even seen some of these vultures steal the clothes and shoes of victims alowing them to die naked on these scenes. These vultures are the lowest form of humanity and dont deserve to live

      Eugene - 2011-12-06 16:57

Very Sad Johan, but at the same time if you have nothing and you are desperate enough to steal clothes and shoes of a ad dying person.... surely it is the circumstances surrounding such people that should also take part of the blame?

      ElKapino - 2011-12-07 10:18

i hope when u say i have seen people ripping the watches off dying victim's arm refering to people of all color or race. to me ripping some1's else watch and sitting in the office and loot some other peoples money sounds the same.

  • Brian - 2011-12-06 15:25

these cops! instead of chasing those people who had stolen shoes they all went after those who had stolen beer. typical!

  • Mashudu - 2011-12-06 15:27

    some people are heartless.

  • Jack - 2011-12-06 15:29

haha, beer and shoes, cant get any better than that!

  • stephenbaum - 2011-12-06 16:45

The same thing happened in Howick some years back. There was a fatal accident and while the injured were dying, they were robbed of their cell phones, shoes, wallets and other belongings. No assistance was provided. Instead they were looted at their most critical time of need. As a result those who may well have survived if help had come, died.

  • Peter - 2011-12-06 17:34

    Africa this.

  • Elmandi - 2011-12-06 18:23

I witnessed a similar scene in September when driving from Bloem to Joburg. The police were already on the scene but that didn't stop the locals from looting. My fiance (Australian) couldn't believe his eyes. Be ashamed, Africa, be ashamed.

could we bonafide South Africans take action towards these actions, as we talk about them but they do not go away, unless WE stand up against them then there is a way forward, lets learn to do something positive to eradicate the ills. South Africa my home Lets not our children suffer from ill environment

  • Itumeleng - 2011-12-06 18:52

  • Koos - 2011-12-06 22:47

Study your history my friends. Go back 200 years. This is a culture thing. If you are surprised by these actions then you are living in a dream world. This is how these things have always behaved. You cannot expect evolution to happen in 200 takes millions of years.

  • Royston - 2011-12-07 06:48

  • Carin - 2011-12-07 07:27

Guess they were more concerned about the beer than the driver trapped inside the truck. he was only 29 years old. Rest in peace our friend

  • jacques.h.kirchner - 2011-12-07 07:40

I can't believe the comments of some here that are actually looking for probable reasons why the looting took place...! Poverty aside, stealing is wrong. The shoes that were stolen might make the poverty theaory plausible, but the booze smacks of moral decay assuming there were any to start off with. One of life's few truths are the fact that "the wheel turns" for everyone...
