Rustenburg - Police have fired teargas at a crowd of protesters in a township near a mine owned by Anglo American Platinum near Rustenburg, the company said.

"I can confirm that the SAPS (South African Police Service) used teargas to disperse an illegal gathering at Sondela informal settlement," spokesperson Mpumi Sithole said in an e-mail to Reuters.

what constitutes an illegal gathering? eish and these people were at a township not at the mine...this Phiyega lady must step down now....!

      ludlowdj - 2012-09-19 11:24

Anything the government says is illegal is illegal, effectively in terms of the law any occasion where two or more people meet can be declared an illegal gathering, funnily enough this broad law would allow a church congregation to be declared an illegal gathering.

For any gatherings you need to apply for it from the local municipality and Police. Marikane miners took 6 weeks to figure this out, got permission to gather for an hour at a stadium.

      I agree.

Unfortunately this strikes are going to carry on for a long time now. The standards have been set by Lonmin. You give to the one, the other one now wants as well. Good luck to everyone involved in the mining industry in SA, including the SAPS. It is going to get rough from here on going forward

  • nakita.willemse.5 - 2012-09-19 11:19

honestly these strikers are so damn dramatic!.

American Platinum where, in Chicago? mxxxm. this mine is in Rustenburg and it should be serving people of South Africa but now is busy taking the money to New York and somehow some people are calling us blind or stupid when we want mines to be nationalised

      Jaap - 2012-09-19 11:49

You are in fact stupid, one must work for what you want in life and stop to act like a parasite. Every second word is demand, demand. The mines provided for 100's of thousands of people work over the years. If it was not for the mines a lot of people would have been destitute and starving. They still provide tax money to your Government to pay out grants to people that does not want to work.

      sean.carbutt - 2012-09-19 12:04

tshepo, everytime you post something you just prove to the rest of us just how stupid and uneducated you are. Nowhere does nationalisation work, You will not see a penny from nationalisations, niks, nada. You will just allow the rich BLACKS to get richer and the poor BLACKS will get poorer. You are either just plain stupid, a dimwit, retared if you think that for one moment a nationalised mine will freely just give their money back to a bunch of uneducated, millitant, stupid, lazy moaners.FFS man, at some stage the neurons will start sparking and then you might just see some of the light.

      cindy.singh.35 - 2012-09-19 12:13

But u are retarded hey...Anglo American is a SA company dual listed on JSE and LSE NOT America...pls research a topic before you decide you exhibit your lack of knowledge and stupidity !!!

      Alfjoe - 2012-09-19 12:17

Do u rily knw who wil benefit to ths nationalisation? Big wigs in the rulling party and nt u.

      victoria.kennedy.3532 - 2012-09-19 13:07

Ai shame, you're not the sharpest tool in the shed are you? Do yourself a favour and Google nationalisation and see how much success other countries had with that idea. Why lets not repeat every mistake made in history and also while we are at it reinvent the wheel cause seriously that was a stupid design. Tshepo wake up and smell the roses! Nationalisation is not the answer. All you want is to live in a country where you can do nothing and get paid for it, well nationalisation is not going to give you that.

      Michell Few Nienaber - 2012-09-19 12:50

It is illegal because people are being stabbed 8 times with a knife do you think that is legal they say they are striking for more money but they go around killing and attacking people just as they please. It is barbaric

  • mehluleli.majajini - 2012-09-19 11:41

They have the right to protest. They have a duty too to respect the law by not damaging property and killing innocent responsible co-miners and authorities.

  • mehluleli.majajini - 2012-09-19 11:42

Illegal gathering when authorities can contemplate danger to society. Yes illegal gathering when some plan to kill the innocent that worry about feeding families keep themselves going..........

  • Erna - 2012-09-19 12:02

There we go, in the footsteps of Lonmin. The miners will now treat that as a 'free for all'.

  • thapelo.teleki - 2012-09-19 12:08

now that marikana miners got what they fought for i know certain community is not happy

  • mmangaliso - 2012-09-19 12:13
