Johannesburg - Two men robbed an Mthatha man using a police-issued firearm on Wednesday, Eastern Cape police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the two men stormed into a house in Mthatha and robbed the owner of his cellphone and an undisclosed amount of money.

The man put up a fight and one of his attackers dropped a gun and cellphone before fleeing from the scene.

"Police have found out that the firearm was issued to the SA Police Service. We are investigating how a police-issued gun ended up at a crime scene...we want to know whether it was sold, stolen or lost," he said.

Fatyela said a week ago a police constable from Bloemfontein was arrested after he was found driving a car reported to have been hijacked.

"There are officers who are involved in criminal activities, that is why we are investigating how the gun ended up at a crime scene."
