Johannesburg - Two police officers who allegedly solicited a bribe from a man who was on his way to sell scrap metal were arrested on Monday, Gauteng police said.

Spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said the two constables, aged 29 and 30 respectively, were on duty near Alexandra on Monday morning when they allegedly threatened the man with arrest.

"Thereafter, they demanded money. An amount of R2 000 was allegedly handed to them. As they were driving away from the scrap yard, police were informed," he said.

They were then arrested by the members of Bramley SA Police Service, who were on a routine visit to second hand goods shops in the area

"They were confronted and [the] amount of money taken from the victim was found in their possession... Their state vehicle was handed back to the station commander of Alexandra."

The two will appear in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of corruption.
