Durban - Police are searching for the driver of one of the vehicles involved in a head-on collision near Nongoma that killed eight people.

The driver of a Ford Sierra escaped unscathed from the accident with a Nissan bakkie late on Saturday evening on the R618 between Nongoma and Vryheid.

All seven occupants of the bakkie were killed on impact, while one of the two passengers of the Ford, who was taken to Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, died on arrival, according to the KwaZulu-Natal department of transport.

Transport spokesperson Nathi Sukuzi said the driver of the Ford was picked up from the scene by a relative and has not been seen since.

“As far as we are aware, the police are still looking for the driver,” said Sukuzi. He said no names of the deceased would be released to the media until all relatives had been informed.

The deceased - six adults and two children - are all said to be from Hlobane, about 20km east of Vryheid.

Transport, community safety and liaison MEC Willies Mchunu expressed his shock at the accident. “The government will not rest with its efforts to fight road carnage through our educational programmes, as well as enforcement measures,” he said.
