Cops hunt for elderly couple's attackers

Johannesburg - Police are working on several leads following the brutal murder of a 71-year-old man in Sophiatown, Johannesburg.

The man and his 73-year-old wife were attacked in their home in the early hours of Wednesday morning while they were asleep.

According to police, two men gained entry into the couple's home through an open window.

"They stabbed the man and also strangled the lady. She is in hospital at the moment," said Warrant Officer Jerbes de Bruyn. 

Her condition is unclear. 

Her husband was declared dead on the scene. 

The two attackers made off with jewellery, a television and a DVD player.

A case of robbery, attempted murder and murder is being investigated.
