TWO Kranskop policemen are appearing in the Pietermaritzburg high court charged with kidnapping and the execution-style murder of a taxi operator in March 2012.

The two men — Thubelihle Nxumalo (31) and Phakamani Zondi (29) — pleaded not guilty in the high court yesterday to charges that they forcefully took Makhosonke Mpungose from his home on March 22, 2012 and shot him dead along the Elandskraal road near Helpmekaar in the Dundee district.

The state alleges that the two policemen were approached for help in connection with a taxi dispute that arose at the MTN taxi rank in Johannesburg.

The victim was a taxi owner operating in Gauteng at the time, and it was allegedly decided by those opposed to him that he had to be killed.

The prosecution alleges that unknown members of the taxi association had asked the two policemen for help to kill Mpungose.

On March 18, 2012, they allegedly went to Mpungose’s home in order to establish his whereabouts and to check his residence. They allegedly returned on March 22 to carry out their plan.

Armed with firearms that were not their service pistols the policemen allegedly drove from Kranskop to Mpungose’s residence.

There they introduced themselves as members of the SAPS from Durban and instructed the taxi owner to accompany them to Ladysmith for questioning.

They also allegedly handcuffed him.

Along the Elandskraal road he was taken out of their vehicle and allegedly shot multiple times.

The case is proceeding.
