Cops kill man who skipped red light

2012-10-25 10:03

Johannesburg - A man who apparently skipped a red traffic light was shot dead allegedly by police in Diepkloof, Soweto, it was reported on Thursday.

Tumi "Bozza" Rantlhaku, 22, was shot three times - once in the head -while speeding away on Tuesday, The Star reported.

Rantlhaku was travelling in a Honda Civic with two passengers.

"The police were driving two cars, one [an unmarked] Golf GTI and a normal (branded) police van. We didn't see if the guys in the Civic were shooting or not. One of the guys died," an anonymous witness was quoted as saying.

The witness said one of the passengers, who looked as if he was armed, tried to run away from police but was shot in the foot. The second passenger was also arrested.

Another witness, however, said the trio didn't have any guns on them.

Rantlhaku's aunt, grandmother, other relatives and neighbours on Wednesday tried to piece together what could’ve prompted police to shoot the young man, who they described as a “people’s person with no problem with anyone”.

According to the report, Rantlhaku died at the scene after waiting for an ambulance for over three hours.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate are investigating the incident.

Something MUST be done about our police! One panics immediately when approach by an officer of the law. I for one will think twice, before stopping, when pulled of by an officer at night if there is no other vehicles around.

      lynette.venter.12 - 2012-10-25 10:39

Sad but true... but now if you dont stop - you get shot!

      boltonbarry - 2012-10-25 11:56

And you two now know EXACTLY what happened because of a half arsed report by news24. Awesom going to ask you two to play the lotto for me. When investigating a case you have 5 W's that you need to get answers to. Who, What, When, Where and Why. Going on this Report we have 4 W's. The W that is outstanding is Why. We do not know why. And the other 4 W's was based on eye witness accounts who in itself varies We also dont know the rolls the two police vehicles had in this chase. Perhaps that unmarked police vehicle was chasing the vehicle and the van joined later or visa versa. Lets assume that the vehicle did not stop after commiting an offens that is outlined in the National road traffic act. The police now thinks there is a reason for this and it is now their duty to investigate. They chase after the vehicle and he doesnt stop. Now he is breaking all sorts of road traffic acts as he is probably speeding and endangering the lives of other people and he has now turned his car in to a potential weapon as it can kill someone. He is endangering the lives of the general public whom the police is sworn to protect as well as the lives of his passengers are now in seee where i am going with this. But yeah I guess sensationalism is what you two need for your boring lives and you need to speculate about a situation that you know nothing about so that you at least have something to talk about on your water fountain break.

      boltonbarry - 2012-10-25 12:23

OH and if you two bright sparks analize the article it doesnt say he was shot because he failed to stop at the light.

      VWhitepaw - 2012-10-26 08:40

Last time I checked... Legally you don't need to stop if you feel unsafe, provided you drive directly to a police station. The police would follow you all the way to the police station. However, I sometimes wonder if the police knows this. I've seen police that looks like they do not know the law they are applying.

      irma.white.9 - 2012-10-26 09:41

Well apparently you are allowed to put your hazzards on and signal to them that you are going to drive, slowly, to the nearest police station.

      matthew.swanepoel.9 - 2012-10-26 09:57

This is the ANC killing the masses.

      nicolene.kotze1 - 2012-10-26 16:06

Yeah, and now we have to "honour" the police service on monday with the blue ribbons... I don't think so.

      werner.m.strydom - 2012-10-26 17:06

I had the displeasure of having to file a case with the Linden police station, for a car accident caused by another driver. When we were eventually helped by a police officer to fill in a form, he at first appeared to be completely uninterested and told us to fill the form in ourselves. I blatantly refused and he eventually had to do it himself...until he stopped halfway and said his taxi had arrived and he was now going home. Sigh.

      madeleine.mills - 2012-10-26 22:02

How I wish I could have one rand for each car, taxi or Putco bus that I see skipping red lights on a daily basis in the central Pretoria/Hatfield area. I could stop working as I would become rich.

  • mrsku11 - 2012-10-25 10:16

So they ran and were armed but the heading says police shot for jumping red light? not good news24, not good.

      grant.callaway.50 - 2012-10-25 10:33

Technically, the headline says that a man who jumped a red light was shot. It doesnt say that was WHY he was shot, merely that he was shot after jumping a red light. But News24 are certainly trying to make it look like the reason! :P

      vaughan.greene - 2012-10-26 12:25

well done SAPS for doing such a good job, they skipped a red robot and then ran from the police. makes me wonder what they would have been up to if the police hadn't stopped them? could have been the same sort of crowd that robbed me last night.

  • bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-10-25 10:18

There has to be more to this story, I don't believe the cops just shot a guy for skipping a red robot, perhaps news 24 should have waited for clarity before creating more hysteria against the police force, they are not the bad guys out there.

      lynette.venter.12 - 2012-10-25 10:39

      Not always, but they are...

This is terrible news. Yesterday Marikana and today this. I wonder if the cops actually tried other means of apprehending the driver? We will never know the real story. Such a waste of a young life. I am very sad. Our police are without real leadership or education. They are a ticking time bomb. We are well and truly on our way to a third world regime.

  • rozanne.peters - 2012-10-25 10:20

why did they speed away from the cops. why did they not stop when signalled to do so by the cops. the article claerly says they were speeding away, and one tried to run away. not saying anyone is right or wrong, but who runs away from the cops if you hane no reason to.

      amico.amico.5 - 2012-10-25 10:28

I would have ran away as well but towards the nearest police station. Bogus cpos are all over in our days. And again I wouldn't just stand and wait to get shot when cops are firing at me, I'd also run my a$$ out.

      marcel.pietersen.31 - 2012-10-25 10:47

As a police official myself its very funny on how south africans behave when we got killed, they rejoyce bt when we shoot those criminals who killed us everyday its news headlines just remember we are also human and pls can anyone tell me why they skipped the red robort was its because they wanted to commit a crime and ws then aware of our presence and why did they have to speed away after they was instructed to to stop by the police, why the others tried to ran away was it because they ws on the most wanted list pls just tell me why,and pls tell me why we are treated like rubbish pls, just remember that we also have families

      ludlowdj - 2012-10-25 11:19

Depends on who tried to stop them, would you honestly stop for an unmarked vehicle just because someone in it was wearing a police uniform, I most certainly wouldn't stop until I reached the nearest police station. As for them being armed, under the same circumstance if someone in the unmarked vehicle pulled a firearm on you, how would you react?

      lebakeng.nchaupe - 2012-10-25 12:11

let me start shooting and see if you ll wet your pants or run,in ths case we don't really knw what happend why thy started shoot why an unmarked car news24 next time report full details and not mislead people

      lorain.maseko - 2012-10-25 10:42

It's not just News24 that does it, that sort of reporting is what sells.

  • John Moriri - 2012-10-25 10:35

why did the post this when they clearly don't know what happened

  • Genesistt - 2012-10-25 10:41

I just find it interesting that in the end this is yet another story of someone dying because he was waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Our emergency medical services are scary. I don't even want to think what I would do if I need an ambulance urgently. Probably just get into my own car and drive to the hospital holding my intestines in with my seatbelt.

  • kitty2wp - 2012-10-25 10:42

i'm sure the police would not have fired shots without good reason and if they did and no guns were found on the suspects - then those police will have many questions to answer. It is our criminals who blatantly shoot at police that are making our police extra nervous and trigger happy. Imagine our police saying 'stop or i'll shoot', it doesn't work like that in SA. anyway what does N24 mean that he was shot for going through a red light - is that the truth???

  • christopher.collings.9 - 2012-10-25 10:44

    wouldnt be a 1st hey

  • lesego.matabane.90 - 2012-10-25 10:44

news24, it would have really been smart of you to let us in on what the these police men have to say about this...but then again, their version of what occurred is not that important after all, right? That aside, what puzzels me the most is how come the guy waited 3hrs for an ambulence to arrive...bare in mind this took place in the Diepkloof area, which is 5-10min away from Baragwanath Hospital??? Alot needs to be answered for here!

      irma.white.9 - 2012-10-26 09:46

Baragwanath is a shockingly crappy hospital... it's no wonder the ambulance came so late.

      BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-10-25 12:54

Exactly. What do we actually get for our Tax money? Unless you're one of the lucky few who has a medical aid, you're screwed if you need to rely on state supplied medical response / hospitalisation.

  • karen.t.hawkey - 2012-10-25 10:58

uhmmmm ... i'm almost lost for words here! Just one question, aside from the obvious regarding the need to shoot somebody 3 times for skipping a red light, why did the police not take the chap to hospital instead of waiting over 3 hours for an ambulance? He may have survived! And these are the people we pay (with our tax money) to protect and serve us?!?!?!

      boltonbarry - 2012-10-25 12:19

They are not allowed to as per their standing orders

      karen.t.hawkey - 2012-10-25 16:44

  • jim.dickson2 - 2012-10-25 11:23

The facts would be nice. Did the police attempt to chase and stop the traffic offender! Did the "offender" try to escape from being chased by an "Unmarked car" filled with firearm weilding men? Given the fact that criminals wearing police uniform and using police vehicles have been hi-jacking people in the Gauteng area you don't know who is police and who is not anymore. Minimum force?
