Cops shot in dramatic highway shoot-out

2015-03-29 14:03

Johannesburg - A section of the N3 south in Modderfontein has been blocked off completely after three SA police service officers were shot at by unknown suspects, the Johannesburg metro police department said on Sunday.

- Were you there? Send us your eyewitness accounts and photos.

"Three SAPS members were shot. One apparently in the head, another in the leg and the other in the leg," spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said.

She said the N3 between Linksfield and London Road had been closed off as it was a crime scene.

She urged motorists to use alternative routes.

The motive of the shooting was not known.

The suspects fled in a Mercedes Benz which was found abandoned not far from the scene.

"They hijacked another vehicle," she said.

- Later reports indicated that two of the shot officers had died.

To be a Policeman is one of the dangerous jobs nowadays.

      Blinde Sjambok - 2015-03-29 15:44

...policing world wide is and will always be a dangerous choice of career ...yet, it remains a personal choice! I used to admire this heroic 'patriotism' and humbly respected the uniformed ...until the SAP became the SAPS (presently the Z783SAPS) and proper policemen had to move aside for the cockroaches to infest... Were these cops 'dealt with' because of some involvement in crime ...?! You just never know these days ...eish!

      Gwilym John Howes - 2015-03-29 16:38

Shame on you Blinde Sjambok, for judging these policemen before you have any basis to surmise that they were involved in anything except their duty. As the facts are emerging, it seems as though you have a made a fool of yourself and have cast hollow aspersions on heroes. A decent person would be ashamed, but that will not worry you, I am sure.

      Scott Kelly - 2015-03-29 18:34

With respect Gwilym John Howes, Blinde Sjambok wasn't judging but merely posing a question.

  • Tapedza Hondo - 2015-03-29 14:15

    That heading is misleading N24!!

      Gerhardus Windpomp - 2015-03-29 14:42

My thought exactly. What types of guns did the criminals use? As a law abiding, tax paying citizen I cannot protect my family with a hand gun against a group of machine gun armed assailants. It is not fair!!

      John Darnielle - 2015-03-29 15:10

I don't think its intentionally misleading. It's just written by idiots

  • Mams Mamazana - 2015-03-29 14:19

...uuh, which side of the fence do you pee from, Mamazana?

  • kerrilee.nelbroncho - 2015-03-29 14:20

Yes the headline says cops killed and the article says two shot in the leg and one in the head. I hope they will all be ok.

I am probably way off, but if you are hit in the femoral artery and cannot stop the bleeding quickly you could die pretty quickly. having said that, this article is badly written and edited.

  • Charlene Jefferies-Moore - 2015-03-29 14:36

#N3SouthShooting @PigSpotter ... Update » On N3 . ....Sandringham SAPS stopped a vehicle on the highway ... routine stop and search ... unbeknown to them another vehicle stopped behind them and opened fire ... occupants of the stopped vehicle opened fire on SAPS aswell ... they received fire from the back and front. There was no robbery. Cold blooded murder. Sadly its a all members of Sandringham SAPS that Lombardy East blockwatch worked closely with. RIP to our fallen and prayers for the recovery of the other officers. Terrible news and great loss.

      Collins Ntelele - 2015-03-29 15:19

So,they ve all died because this article is sketchy?

      Nikki Downes - 2015-03-29 15:38

Those poor Sandringham police have such a dangerous area to cover. May they rest in peace. Condolences to their families and friends.

  • Liye Jonas - 2015-03-29 14:38

BAD BAF BAD. Where is it going to end.

      Edward Pennacchini - 2015-03-29 22:19

Annette, it is bad, very bad. What we are seeing in the media is only the tip of the iceberg and if the criminals break through the thin blue line protecting us then God help us all because they will attack our suburbs and businesses like we have not seen. Check out all the articles about sharp rise in farm murders and attacks on shopping malls.

      Johnny Johnny Shun - 2015-03-29 16:07

Dont resign sir, but please next time when confronted, aim carefully and shot shot shot to kill. Criminals take you SAPs members for granted. The law protects them more than yourselves. So, few words of advise from a caring civilian. for backup...shot....check the paulse...and finish off. Tit for tat. I'm sick of this! Really.

      Edward Pennacchini - 2015-03-29 22:28

Luckie, please do not resign we do not want the thin blue line that is protecting us to get any thinner. Follow the example set by former police commissioner Bheki Cele and when you are confronted by criminals, shoot first and ask questions later.

  • Anthony Gore - 2015-03-29 15:06

sad when not even a single political or civic organisation wants to campaign for the re introduction of the dealth penalty. What does Amnesty International say about these types of murders?

  • Thabang Kgano - 2015-03-29 15:06

Badly written article. .doesn't really say much..

  • Kgadi Ya Batau Sekoaila - 2015-03-29 15:10

Is very sad coz if u look it ul find that the officer who is dead is renting a room at the back of one of the suspects yard bcou nt because he likes to do so bt bcoz he can't afford . police officers dnt afford to buy houses by themselves now his wife and kids are going to suffer as they won't afford to pay rand. Saps dnt care about members. Wt they knew is to sing stop n search n after a member is dead the wil be no deep investigation like senzo mayiwa and others. Police officers r killed everyday n wt the minister wil say is we wil investigate.

      Graham Radburnd - 2015-03-29 17:52

@ Kgadi. So many thumbs down. I'm sure they are not for the good sentiments that you express in your comment, but rather for the way that you write your comment. Many people don't like this lazy abbreviated English. I give you a thumbs up for what you are saying.

  • Nuemi Kelly - 2015-03-29 15:14

Personally I think the death penalty should be brought! We as SA citizens cannot carry on living like this. These criminals that care for any form of life...they are murderous scumbags who get joy out of what they are doing!! So senseless...what about these victims families? What happens to them? Their breadwinners have been savagely removed because of greedy, soulless people!

  • Kgadi Ya Batau Sekoaila - 2015-03-29 15:26

So now police are afraid of criminals. If the police short them first, they wil be facing charges of murder n b dismissed. So they must wait for suspect to kil them in order to save their work. That's sheet. It makes me angry cos now police take time to protect us, they take time to respond n I understand they r scared of suspect n to save their stupid unpaing job.

  • Sandiso Makanjana - 2015-03-29 15:26

Its time for the mourning families to stop these so called leaders on making the statements or condolences on funerals of their loved ones, hence they are the reason of this mess. They just talk about someone calling him or as hero but they don't even know the person. They dont change their crap justice system. We need to bring new system of fighting this on going crime

      Nikki Downes - 2015-03-29 15:33

Brilliantly stated. It's all just hot air if they don't make serious changes. May these policemen rest in peace. That London Road off ramp is deadly. Why haven't they broken up the chop shops in Linbro Park yet? ?? Surely we don't know more than the police do?

      Sandiso Makanjana - 2015-03-29 15:39

Yes, they just drive their expensive cars with body guards to attend funerals & after tht its nothing. It so bad

      Sandiso Makanjana - 2015-03-29 17:54

      Thanks editor for correcting me

One of the dumbest things you could ever do as a criminal is to kill a police officer.Seriously.Its already their job to investigate crime and bring offenders to book, and now,in all your divine wisdom, you give them more incentive to hunt you down and manhandle you for prematurely retiring their fellow comrades. These killers Will be found and they Will be treated like crap, and no-one will even care to listen to them.Condolences to the families of the deceased.

  • Simphiwe Spijo Nxumalo - 2015-03-29 16:07

As a police officer it is really sad to read such news and yet the government just don't care the justice system is so.lenient on criminals nd oppresses the law enforcers nd the law abiding citizens

      Fransie Van Zyl - 2015-03-29 16:23

What you say is so true in the line of duty innocent people with families get killed so so sad

      Manoko Wa Mpya - 2015-03-29 17:01

This is because the law itself is led by criminals

  • Matthew Du Toit - 2015-03-29 16:14

Bring back death penalty and that will bring the crime down nicely.

  • Johnny Johnny Shun - 2015-03-29 16:15

Technically, we are in a state of war. Every corner, brick or mortar is vulnerable. No one is safe in SA, including the policticians. Not even those legally meant to protect us (aka SAPS). It seems violence precedes violence. God save our gentle souls!!

  • Alicia Motsepe - 2015-03-29 16:27

So sad shame. May their souls RIP.

  • Jayden Bango - 2015-03-29 16:28

The motive for killing is unknown....wake up! They didnt want to be caught

      arthur.salvado - 2015-03-29 17:08

Or perhaps the cops were up to no good . We know that there are thousands of convicted criminals in our police force. We know that our ....sorry, the police force is largely corrupt. So, it's not surprising that they get shot.

      Riaan Coetzee - 2015-03-29 17:18

There is a time to discuss corruption in the police, but now is not the time. Human lives were lost. Have some respect.

If Mouse/Rat kills a Cat you must know that something is not good about the environment. Did you know that private security componies are more armed with assaulting riffles than state Police? Did you know that giant private security companies are owned by foreigners? Did you know that trained solidiers from outside the country are staying here without being profiled? Did you know that, if there are three thousands trained solidiers from outside the country and they are unemployed ,that can be a serious challenge to our country. The enviroment is not good for our police officers ase they use pistols whiles the private security componies are using assaulting riffles. Leaders must do something, please organise Security symposium and call all the security clusters as well as various critical thinkers .

      Marina Oosthuizen - 2015-03-29 21:05

I was thinking the same thing. Then again even Internationally the cops have only pistols. I wonder why. Something is wrong I agree with you!

  • Lesley Da Les - 2015-03-29 20:00

Cops didn't even had a chance to fight back, the criminal was shot by guys from a private security company, security companies doing a good job though they not using luxury cars to patrol around, limited resources bt they can still do the job, you can b given machine guns but if you dont know how to use them its useless to hand them out. Good job security guys.

  • Lesley Da Les - 2015-03-29 20:08

Big up to the guys from a private security company who managed to shoot the criminal, cops in a gti 6 never fought back they out classed, limited resources bt they can still do the job (security)

I sat in that traffic for about 1 1/2 hours and never saw cops. I saw security guards from private security company who blocked off side roads on 2nd lane after I took the Malboro off ramp. Then further when I eventually got on the hi way again I saw cops siting in the car boot relaxing as if nothing just happened. But the cop was also so fat I think it is disgusting. How will he catch a criminal, or will he just shoot him?
