Cape Town - More than 700 firearms belonging to the SA Police Service were either stolen or went missing in the past year.

Police Minister Nathi Nhleko, answering a question from DA spokesperson on police Dianne Kohler Barnard, revealed that 743 firearms had disappeared from police custody.

The biggest loss was in KwaZulu-Natal, where 165 weapons went missing.

The Eastern Cape was not far behind with 150 weapons while Gauteng was in third place with 139 missing or stolen firearms.

This is still an improvement on 2013/2014, when the police lost 773 firearms, and 2012/2013 when 840 disappeared.
