Pretoria - A spokesperson for the Revenue Service, Siba Mfabe, says three men have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle rhino horns worth more than R2m out of the country.

Two of them were arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport, 30 minutes before the World Cup opening ceremony.

"The two were carrying 18 pieces of rhino horns destined for Vietnam," he said.

"The horns, wrapped in plastic bags and hidden under clothes, were detected by an alert Acsa official who contacted Sars officials."

One horn was estimated to be worth close to R1.7m.

Sars customs officials and the police on Wednesday arrested a foreign student travelling to Vietnam with 11.7kg of rhino horn, worth an estimated R605 000.

Mfabe said these six pieces of horn were concealed in the same way as the others.
