Pietermaritzburg - A high-speed car chase on Monday saw criminals barrelling through Pietermaritzburg with police close on their bumpers before they were eventually arrested near Cedara.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese said Liberty Midlands Mall security guards spotted people in a vehicle who they believed were behind a string of thefts out of motor vehicles at the mall’s parking lot.

When the guards approached, the vehicle sped off, driving through the boom gates.

Ngobese said the police Tactical Response Team (TRT) and K9 unit were then mobilised.

The officers chased the vehicle as it raced from the mall to the Sweetwaters area, then past Hilton and Howick.

The men were eventually brought to a halt near Cedara, where they were arrested.

Ngobese said the men were wanted for various other crimes including thefts out of motor vehicles, housebreaking and ATM bombings.

The men will appear in court soon.
