Cops nab man with speed jammer

2013-01-06 14:35

Johannesburg - A man was arrested after he was found in possession of a speed jamming machine along the N3 in Heidelberg, Gauteng traffic police said on Sunday.

"He was stopped on Saturday after the speed machine used by traffic officials failed to detect the speed he was travelling in. The equipment was found in the car," said spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo.

Nxumalo said the equipment prevented the detection of the speed a vehicle was travelling at.

The man was charged with defeating the ends of justice.

He is expected to appear in the Heidelberg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

    CRIME doesn't PAY

      BulletProof. - 2013-01-06 19:30

Were is the law saying that you can not have that electronic device?

      sally.lewitt - 2013-01-06 23:54

Beg to differ Trevor.. In SA, CRIME does PAY! Open your eyes around you.. Sad fact.

      paul.nefdt - 2013-01-07 01:50

"Defeating the ends of Justice"?? how did the cops know in the first place if the guy exceeded the legal speed limit, if they could not determine his actual speed?? But if that's mind boggling, go sit in the court case & you'd be amazed at how the Magistrate seems to take the state's part instead of being impartial or neutral...

Where can I get that machine?

      james.hunt.161214 - 2013-01-06 16:22

http://www.laserguys.co.za/ However they are illigal but.. From the site above: >>Radar detectors have been declared legal for use in countries like the UK and the US with the exception of two states. In South Africa some legal sources say using a laser detector is illegal (it might defeat the ends of justice) but owning one and selling is not and there is no recorded instance of a motorist being successfully prosecuted for using such a device. New Zealand allows the use of them, as police involved in traffic work believe that radar & laser detectors slow drivers down. We are marketing radar and laser detectors as we believe that radar/laser detectors are a necessity to reduce the risk of a speeding ticket with today's ever stricter speed-policing. These Radar/Laser Detector units allow drivers to concentrate more on driving safely instead of constantly watching the speedometer.>>

      kokkieh - 2013-01-07 06:21

@James, laser detectors (warn you that a laser is being pointed at you) are not illegal in SA (as far as I know) but laser/radar jammers (prevent laser from seeing your vehicle) are illegal. It seems the article refers to the latter.

WHEN WILL OUR AUTHORITIES REALIZE THAT SPEED DOES NOT KILL. IT IS THE IDIOTS WHO ARE DRUNK DRIVING AT 40 ON A FREEWAY, DOING U-TURNS WHEN CARS APPROACH ETC. THAT KILLS. ALL SPEED DOES IS MAKE THE RESULT MORE SPECTACULAR. RECENTLY THEY TESTED A CRASH TEST CAR AND DUMMY AT 100KMH AND THE RESULT WAS HORRIFIC. YOU KNOW EVERY TIME YOU GO PASSED AN ACCIDENT AND SAY "THAT GUY WAS DOING AT LEAST 200KMH - WELL GUESS WHAT????? AFTER YOU SEE THOSE PICS - CONTROLLED AT 100KMH - YOU WILL SAY THAT THE ONE YOU THOUGHT WAS 200kmh WAS ONLY ABOUT 80KMH or 90KMH. YOU SEE WHAT KILLS IS A N Y ACCIDENT above 25KMH where one of the parties involved made a mistake NOT RELATED TO OUR LAWS OF SPEEDING. UNTIL YOU AND THE AUTHORITIES REALIZE THIS OUR ROAD DEATHS WILL KEEP GOING UP.

Some good points....but why the hell in caps lock..!

      jacques.stander - 2013-01-06 15:14

They do realize it ........ But its an easy way of making money .... too easy !!!! Hiding on a camping stair in the bushes .....hardwork :-)

      wreford.white.9 - 2013-01-06 15:15

      Why are you shouting?

      trevor.dean.10 - 2013-01-06 15:38

Sorry, but if you knew the first thing about the laws of physics you would know that speed does kill. The higher the speed, the longer it takes to slow down / stop, thus making a collision more likely. Secondly the higher the speed, the bigger the force of impact when a collision does occur. The force of impact determines the amount of damage done to the persons or things involved in the collision.

      lara.vanrooyen.1 - 2013-01-06 15:57

Now, now, trev2, don't come with science arguments against these speed freaks. Speeding is religion in this country.

      thando.gqabaza - 2013-01-06 19:35

@trev - you are wrong. You have described crashing at low vs high speeds. What is the rate of accidents here vs the german autobahn? You will find that if speed limits are halved we will still have a problem because of ill discipline

      kobus.oosthuizen.58 - 2013-01-06 20:37

true, but speed makes a vehicle more difficult to control, the reaction time needed to to react, as well as time and distance needed to stop, is drastically increased. travelling at the speed limit increases your chances at survival when the unexpected happens. a blowout might be controllable at 120, not so at 200.

      gareth.debruyn.33 - 2013-01-06 23:03

@Thando 100% agreed. Germany with their killer autobahn has a death toll of 4.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants per year. South Africa 33.2 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants per year.... Clearly its speeds fault that we have so many deaths. But as with anything in SA catching speeders is a quick win.Its easy to sit on your fat ass catching speeders, instead of visible policing.

      dane.oreily - 2013-01-07 01:14

The difference between SA and the German autobahns is they dont have wandering pedestrians, people amking u-turns, fools running across the lanes, cyclists etc on their highways/autobahns

  • Derek - 2013-01-06 14:53

I guess hiding in the bushes to trap people speeding could also be classified as defeating the ends of justice!!

      jacques.stander - 2013-01-06 15:14

      2nd that

      cyberdog.breath - 2013-01-06 23:19

@Derek, Yes, Agreed, exactly the same principal.

  • JohnDough - 2013-01-06 14:55

He denied the Komrade Fried Chicken brigade their daily bribe that is why he was arrested.

  • ian.robertreid - 2013-01-06 15:02

Was one ahead of the cops? a matter of time?

  • toofaan.monsoon - 2013-01-06 15:06

But laser and radar jammers are advertised openly in many publications. If these things are illegal then how is it that it's allowed to be sold ? If someone can legally buy one, why is it illegal to use it?

      peejay.maclane - 2013-01-06 15:13

Its not illegal to possess them but its illegal when u use it to interfere with the law

  • garthlwilliams - 2013-01-06 15:09

Simple solution - Respect human life and don't speed.

      wreford.white.9 - 2013-01-06 15:19

Duh, Garth, who got killed here? Registered for e=toll yet?

      trevor.dean.10 - 2013-01-06 15:39

Judging by the number of thumbs down, I guess there are a lot of speedsters reading these comments.

  • marilyn.docherty.9 - 2013-01-06 15:11

Make him sit in the bushes with the speed camera so the cops can be out on the roads where they should be!!

  • Tuyez - 2013-01-06 15:18

News 24 should hook me up with guy. I would like to have this marvelous machine.

  • trevor.dean.10 - 2013-01-06 15:33

What's a speed jamming machine? Surely it is a speed-TRAP jamming machine?

  • nettie.potgieter.5 - 2013-01-06 15:39

Why is the accident rate so high? From the commenters reaction it is clear. Nobody have respect for the law and regulations. Next time somebody or one of your family members get kill in a accident don't blame it on bad taxi drivers and ignorant fools blame it on the well informed and educated fools like yourself!

      stavious.mamatepa - 2013-01-07 02:16

      @Nettie thank you dear,well said!

lol. I mst get breathliser jamming machine

  • dan.cooper.9634 - 2013-01-06 20:32

if i am found in the pssesion of sed device it is to warn me of low flying aircraft. If you look at the reports of how incompetent south african pilots are and how pathetic civil aviation is , low flying aircraft is a real and credible threat - thats why i use a radar and laser detector

  • Tshephangsithole - 2013-01-06 22:23

I must get the digits of this guy, i need one as well, coz they too hide in the bushies, will also hide our speeds

  • stavious.mamatepa - 2013-01-07 02:51

Jaa too many graduated fools in south africa,a couple of days ago stander was killed in an accident and everybody was calling for the speeding taxi driver's head while none of you saw him speeding but today y'all singing a different tune just because of a stupid somebody with a stupid device, some of you are saying why these cops hide in the bushes with a camera, the answer is simple because they don't want you to see them because when you see them you'll reduce your speed. My question is do you want to obey the rules when you see an officer or you want to obey them at all times? Stop being ignorant people should the cops found an R5 riffle or a mutilated body in that car you were not going to be negative like you doing now.

  • terrence.naicker.1 - 2013-01-07 07:31

Laserguys are not the only people that sell these devices. There is a company that sells a jamming device that only jams the signal for 5 seconds and then lets the coppers get a reading.I am not going to punt any companies so google can help with that. As far as the law goes , I know it is illegal to ineterfere with a traffic officer while he is attempting to execute his duty so they might well have a case here. Time will tell.

  • Slowmow - 2013-01-07 07:42

You may legally be in possession of such a device. Where the problem comes in with the law is when you use it. If you use such a device be sure to reduce speed as soon as the device warns you about the radar and switch it off when you reach the legal speed.

  • tsepo.mdlalose - 2013-01-07 07:56

Selective justice? The guy didn't pay your bonus/bribe. Look the jammer is wrong but so is the whole system.
