THE police are investigating the murder of a Tongaat woman who was found with her mouth and nose taped, lying on her bedroom floor on Tuesday afternoon.

Leelawathie Rambally (79), who lived alone in her Hercus Avenue home in Belvedere, Tongaat, was last seen at around 7 am on Tuesday morning, outside her house.

“We saw her praying outside in the morning, as she did every morning. She was a lovely, quiet woman who was always friendly to us,” said one of her neighbours, who would not be named.

Prem Balram, director of security company Reaction Unit South Africa, said that Rambally was found face down on her bedroom floor at around 5 pm.

“She had duct tape over her mouth, nose and eyes. There were no signs of forced entry and as far as our investigation goes, it didn’t seem as if it was a robbery,” he said.

Tongaat police Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said Rambally’s son, Kemraj Rambally, had tried calling his mother at around 3 pm on Tuesday afternoon.

“Her son calls her in the afternoon each day and when she didn’t answer her phone, he decided to drive to her house after work. Upon arrival he noticed her front gate and door were open. He called out for her and when he received no response, walked to the bedroom where he found her lying on the floor,” she said.

A case of murder has been opened at the Tongaat police station
