Cape Town - Police are looking for a woman who may have been gang-raped with another commuter in minibus-taxi in Cape Town at the weekend, it was reported on Thursday.

The Cape Times reported that the two women were alone in the vehicle after the taxi driver dropped the rest of his passengers off at the Melomed Hospital in Bellville on Friday evening.

"The driver told the two women that he had to pick up someone in Boston. When they arrived in Boston Avenue, the taxi stopped and three men got in," said Captain Frederick van Wyk.

When the taxi started moving again, one of the men pointed a gun at the women, who did not know each other.

They were blindfolded and forced to the floor of the vehicle, where one of the women was raped by all three men.

"It is not certain if the other woman had also been raped. The taxi stopped at the Karl Bremer Hospital off-ramp where the [raped] woman was pushed out of the taxi. She managed to walk to the hospital and ask for help."

Van Wyk told the newspaper the police did not know what happened to the other woman.

Rape Crisis spokesperson Sarah Strydom said the occurrence of rape in taxis was "nothing new".

"The women don't only have to deal with the trauma of being raped, but often [of] being robbed too," she said.
