Cops probe occult-linked killings

2012-10-20 13:04

Johannesburg - Police investigations were underway following a series of occult-related killings associated with a religious teaching ministry, the Saturday Star newspaper said on Saturday.

According to the paper, three people linked to the Overcomers Through Christ (OTC) teaching ministry were found murdered in the last three months.

Michaela Valentine, 25, found stabbed to death in her home in the West Rand last Thursday.

In July, Natacha Burger, 31, was found dead in a Centurion complex townhouse complex with her throat slit.

Her body was discovered alongside that of her neighbour, Joyce Boonzaier, a 68-year-old with no links to the minister.

In August, Honeydew pastor Reg Bendixen was found dead in the garden of his home. His throat had been cut.

The founder of OTC, Ria Grunewald told the Saturday Star that she and other associates of the ministry were receiving death threats.

"I have received warning text messages that there will be more killings of people who attend my teachings," she was quoted saying.

She also claimed that at one of their meetings, they found home-made petrol bombs.

"The following week four bombs exploded under our parked vehicles during our meeting and four vehicles were damaged," Grunewald said.

She claimed that OTC was not a deliverance ministry but a personal teaching ministry that warned children against Satanism, drugs and sexual immorality.

      kobus.hattingh.5 - 2012-10-20 13:32

Let's not even start about the muti killings etc before you want to go on the race band wagon again ...

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-10-20 14:05

semonatenate, where exactly in this article does it mention ethnicity? You are an idiot of note, don't drag racism wherever you go, it makes you look even more stupid than you already are.

  • sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-10-20 13:13

Maybe its just the common crimals who uses religious beliefs to commit murder. Savages.!

      matthew.patrick.925 - 2012-10-20 15:17

That, unfortunately, is what Satanism teaches, that Man is an animal that must act on his animalistic instincts, like lust, greed, anger, etc., and they shouldn't be accountable to anyone.

      art5SA - 2012-10-21 05:11

Matthew... most RELIGOUS CHRISTIAN PEOPLE live like that ANYWAY!!!! What has that got to do with Satanism?

  • terry.moses.315 - 2012-10-20 13:20

I have no idea why?but i find that many beautiful young girls and women get caught up in this occult activity.I think its the most dangerous activity a person can indulge in,and its fueled with vices.

  • charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-10-20 13:24

The rise of the atheist cult is very concerning...

      kobus.hattingh.5 - 2012-10-20 13:28

So true Charles! You even see it on the comments made under this article :(

      jane.warrington2 - 2012-10-20 13:43

What??? All this crap is associated with THEISTS. Show me one example of atheists being involved. Don't quote Satanism or such - that is a theist cult. Atheists got better things to do.

      deon.jansevanrensburg.58 - 2012-10-20 14:06

You're quite right when you say atheists have better things to studying the bible so that they are able to tell Christians how dumb and ignorant their religion is. It seems to be all the fashion and rage these days - when do you try the same trick with Jews and Muslims or is that just not PC?

      matthew.patrick.925 - 2012-10-20 14:46

@Charles @Kobus: What ignorance, confusing atheism with the Occult/Satanism... You clearly don't understand what a cult, Satanism, or even atheism is. These attacks are clearly between opposing sides of theism.

      billy.bunter.779 - 2012-10-20 15:52

You're so right Jane! Atheists have to spend all their time convincing themselves God does not exist!

      matthew.patrick.925 - 2012-10-20 16:42

Actually, Billy, most of us are pretty much convinced. What's scary is that some Christians are so reliant upon the Bible to explain their existence that they are incapable of questioning and learning about the universe around them.

      tony.vanniekerk.35 - 2012-10-20 17:04

matthew patrick, glad you said "some"

      matthew.patrick.925 - 2012-10-20 22:49

Ja, well, I know it's not a majority. I just know people who are very religious and they see and judge the world in terms of black and white from their high horses. I have nothing against Christianity. It's just the few would-be evangelical preachers that annoy me.

  • johann.enslin.9 - 2012-10-20 13:28

Atheist cult? Oh please...ride another horse to death will you

  • phae.rayden - 2012-10-20 14:10

What a terrifying experience for those involved, however it all sounds a bit odd, anyway I hope this is resolved as quickly as possible and everyone remains safe in the mean time. As for you Charles D... I have endured your idiotic pranks, articles and comments in silence for far too long. The fact that you are still willing to take cheap shots at us atheists with such an inflammatory remark when people are having their throats slit, says you have become an absolute abomination. Please give us all a long break from your ego which has obviously outgrown your brain.

  • gregg.harvey.16 - 2012-10-20 14:14

Charles - you must be an anti jesus campaigner in wolfs clothing, because its people like you who make most atheists the way they are, not all the fairy tales in the bible. You want to help your cause rather keep quiet.

      deon.jansevanrensburg.58 - 2012-10-20 14:33

Hang on, I just want to understand what you are saying here. Atheists have the right to poke fun at Charles' religion, tell him its dumb, moronic and illogical and his defense should be to shut up? That about the gist of it? Maybe you should share this little pearl of wisdom with those pesky DA sycophants as well - they can become quite tiresome as well.

      phae.rayden - 2012-10-20 14:51

Speaking of sycophants, Charles? And what has the DA to do with people being murdered. Wrong place wrong time for these comments! Charles should keep quiet at times like these, his behaviour is very inappropriate, especially as he has fought to make himself the face of Christians on N24 with many followers like you!

      deon.jansevanrensburg.58 - 2012-10-20 14:55

Does my profile look like I'm Charles? And don't try and preach to me about which comments are applicable where - if you can sprout your libtard rubbish under your freedom of speech I have exactly the same right. Now p-off

      matthew.patrick.925 - 2012-10-20 14:56

Since Charles started the debate with his ignorant assumption, does that mean he has the right to mock atheism?

      mario.dippenaar - 2012-10-20 15:25

Charles doesn't represent Christianity, he is just a one guy on the fringe of the scope. The reality is that most people are quite tolerant of each other, but since their comments are bland and predictable, not much attention is given to them. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, that as a Christian, I respect Atheists' viewpoints.

      gregg.harvey.16 - 2012-10-20 15:42

Deon - I have never poked fun or made any remark regarding Charles religion, this was my first comment posted on news24 however I could compose a list of little rants and comments Charles has posted. Perhaps you should discuss your issues regarding DA with Charles, as I am no DA supporter, I wouldn't regard my comment as a 'Pearl of wisdom' rather a bit of constructive criticism and it's not very nice to tell people to p-off. Hope you have a good weekend

      phae.rayden - 2012-10-20 15:44

@deon.' Does my profile look like I'm Charles?' Huh? Not sure you know what's going on here. Libtard? I think I will happily p off from your word sosatie. Bye bye loving Christian.

      phae.rayden - 2012-10-20 15:57

@DerpyHooves, Brony I didn't say Charles represented Christians, just that he has been supported by you guys to be the best known to fight for your cause on N24. @gregg think Deon was directing his piss at me. Don't give up commenting!

  • eugene.ncube - 2012-10-20 16:08

it sounds like somone has an axe to grind with this organisation. And the reporting on this matter is so shallow, you get the feeling the report was censored of sort!

  • damon.leff - 2012-10-20 16:25

Is it legal for the media to publish allegations of criminal activity against a minority religion on the basis of assumption and hearsay only? Is a Christian "ministry against Satanism" (a protected minority religion under the Bill of Rights) targeted at children not contravening the right to freedom from religious prejudice?

  • francisco.fumarola - 2012-10-20 16:29

Oh, come on! The \occult\ label applied here is pure sensationalistic nonsense. Remember the Van Eck murder was also called a \satanic\ and \occult\ killing and later stories revealed it to be anything but. They found all sorts of nonsense connections to tie the crime to supposed satanism - media24 sources and other sources were dead wrong then and they are likely dead wrong again. This occult connection is all wild speculation and it smacks of religious/Christian bias against the occult.

      damon.leff - 2012-10-20 16:40

      Well said!

  • Madoqua - 2012-10-20 18:47

From the article I fail to see where the occult comes into it. Occult generally refers to witchcraft, alchemy, magic, astrology etc. etc. The inference one is forced to make is that either OTC practices some of these rituals or that the killings were ritualistic; neither of which are substantiated by the content of the article.

      liveby.thesword.1 - 2012-10-21 11:52

      human sacrifice....??

  • mark.webb.50 - 2012-10-20 19:59

believe in fairy tales or not a person has a right to their own beliefs, unfortunately religion kills more people than anything else on this planet

  • thelma.flynn.96 - 2012-10-21 09:17

Yup I think satan has been let loose amongst the humans. May GOD have mercy on us

      jaded.oldfart - 2012-10-21 11:20

satan doesn't exist. god doesn't exist. best you realise that no make-believe entity is coming to the rescue.
