Johannesburg - Gauteng police were on Wednesday investigating whether one of their own had assisted a dangerous criminal escape from the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court holding cells.

Lungisani Innocent Mdlolo fled from the court on Tuesday as he was due to be sentenced for murder, three rapes, five armed robberies, 10 housebreakings, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

He is still on the run.

"In the meantime an internal investigation against police members at the court is being conducted to determine if the escape was not due to negligence," said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

Police were going through the CCTV footage at the court and security had since been beefed up.

This year, 32 police officers in the province had been departmentally charged for negligence following the escape of prisoners from custody.

"After disciplinary proceedings, 22 were found guilty and one of them was dismissed from the service," said Dlamini. "Only six were found not guilty."

Disciplinary proceedings against four others were still pending.

Those who were found to have assisted prisoners escape were criminally charged.
Police feared Mdlolo might be armed.

"Several leads are being followed to trace the convict," said Dlamini.
