Cops search for gang rape video victim

2012-04-18 10:12

Johannesburg - Gauteng police say they are working around the clock to track down the 17-year-old girl who was gang raped by seven boys, as public outcry over the incident grows.

Eyewitness News
reported that the gang rape was captured on a 10-minute cellphone video, which has apparently gone viral.

The seven boys - aged between 14 and 20 - were arrested in Dobsonville on Tuesday, and will appear in court on Thursday.

Police say they are following up on leads to find the girl, who was reported missing three weeks ago. It is believed she was abducted and kept as a sex slave.

It is unclear whether she was drugged in the video, or is mentally disabled.

Meanwhile, South Africans have taken to social networks to express their outrage at the incident. The hashtag #rapevideo is currently the top trending topic on Twitter in South Africa.

  • Reshan - 2012-04-18 10:24

The scary thing is how many of these sick crimes are going under the radar because there's no videos, witnesses...

      rbphiri - 2012-04-18 10:38

And in most cases some of the rape cases are either dismissed due to a "lack of evidence". Take for example that elderly man who was ran over by a taxi in full view of CCTV cameras, the judge dismissed the case due to a "lack of evidence". Or was it dismissed due to a lack of funding, hell these days as victims you even have to bribe officials to resolve such disputes. Without hyperbole we are becoming a banana republic, and we have apes for judges. So next time one opts to resolve a certain dispute, arm yourself with bananas for bribery to resolve your case.

      Peter - 2012-04-18 11:15

..... anyone over the age of 18 is NOT a boy!!! These are CRIMINALS of the worst kind. Do not give them an excuse to have their records sealed please!!!

  • Michelle - 2012-04-18 10:26

Please let them find that girl alive :(

      Frank - 2012-04-18 10:36

Torture these 7 pieces of scum so that they reveal where she is! They are probably lounging comfortably in some police station where we still have to feed their sorry @sses! Scum like this should be exterminated before they have time to produce any offspring!!

      rbphiri - 2012-04-18 10:44

If she has been missing since march, chances are slim. No that the video has gone viral, those involved will probably kill the girl to cover their tracks. But i do hope that she is safe and sound. But it's pathetic how certain pro lifers think the death penalty is inhumane, what is more inhumane is the actions perpetrated by the criminals. When an animal acts a human we put the animal down, why can't we do the same with animals lurking in our society.

      Jackie - 2012-04-18 10:55

It probably sounds strange but the girl may rather be dead in this case. This is such an horrific thing to have gone through. I have to wonder if she could ever be ok? Will she ever trust, will she live in fear & jump everytime a man comes towards her? Will she be able to trust enough to go on and have hildren and a somewhat normal life? Not everyone could. I want to cry for her if I think of the terror she faced when she couldnt protect herself and she was at their mercy. Its horrendous. Poor girl.

  • NrGx - 2012-04-18 10:26

knowing our justice department, they will go free because of "lack of evidence".

  • Kala - 2012-04-18 10:29

I would have reasonably expected the police to be investigating this matter 24 hours after the young girls was reported missing. It now takes explicit and disturbing images to get our police force to start an investigation. I really hope that they haven't left it for so long that this poor girl has died a slow and agonising death in the hands of these delinquints

      Robert - 2012-04-18 11:43

Yeah.. It seems we have to report crime to our news providers before things get seen to.

  • reine.marais - 2012-04-18 10:31

The absolute tragedy for this young girl, is that every moment of every day for the rest of her life, the horror and trauma will be in her mind, no matter how much therapy she gets. Her relationships with others for the rest of her life could be tainted by this horrific experience. My prayer for her is that she will find a caring environment in which to restore herself.

      lindaawhelan - 2012-04-18 10:39

The police have to find her first before the healing can begin. I'd start with the scum who raped her and question them with the help of a cattle prod and some fingernail plyers.

      Peter - 2012-04-18 11:18

      Explain the basketball comment Jason?

  • Mashudu - 2012-04-18 10:32

These Boys must Rot in Jail.

      Newsmonger - 2012-04-18 10:58

they should be castrated rather - PUBLICALLY!THis abuse of women and children needs to stop not just for a week in the year everyday should be women and childrens day.

      rbphiri - 2012-04-18 12:02

They are d!kcheads, so we should cut them from their neck up.

  • Liesbet - 2012-04-18 10:33

Still trying to breath after the first article.... absolutely terrible.... young boys....imagine them in their late 20's....

      Xulu.Thulany.Xaba - 2012-04-18 11:47

We lost control over youth wen we gave them 'RIGHTS'

  • Peter - 2012-04-18 10:33

This story is just bizarre!!! We do not have role models in our society to guide this confused boys. Our president was once accused of rape, who do we look up to. A lot of families are child headed. Are we breeding the correct future leaders in this country. How did we get to where we are. If you rape a mentally ill girl, what will stop this boys to rape even their helpless grandmothers. This is scary.

      Tracy - 2012-04-18 10:55

This is the kind of thing the ANCYL should have been talking about to the youth instead of all the garbage they sprouted. Stay in school, get a good education, stay off the streets, responsible drinking, no to drugs, treating others, especially women, with respect, etc. Helping the youth make informed and positive choices.

  • veritas.odium.paret - 2012-04-18 10:34

Why don't they 'ask' those boys? Gimme a baton and a pair of pliers and I'd be very happy to assist in getting answers out of them. Sadly, even criminals of a monstrous type are afforded human rights nowadays!

      Frank - 2012-04-18 10:53

Human rights are the reason these vermin are extended a lifeline in society! If I had my way, human rights would be extended to productive, stand-up members of society and anyone chosing to behave like trash should not have the benefit! Oh, and lawyers should be confined to writing letters and registering bonds and not be allowed to confuse any issue with their BS!!

  • Bobby - 2012-04-18 10:38

This is horrible. I so hope she will be found alive. Check out the Daily Sun, they have a picture of the victim on their front page, so that anyone who might know where she is or who has any kind of information on her could alarm the authorities!

  • tmmotsa - 2012-04-18 10:57

When is the time where our sister will walk around in total freedom with out considering all the harsh realities our male society brings forth to them?\r\n17 full years into democracy our communities are not civilized enough to respect other people's right to live with out fear and a healthy mind.

  • jared.wessels - 2012-04-18 11:01

To be surprised by such an act in South Africa is completely naive. These type of crimes happen on a daily bases and not all of them are so stupid to record it! The only solution to attempt to bring down such crimes, is to bring back the death penalty or severe sentence structure for people found guilty of such crimes then perhaps we will see a decrease in murder, rape and even this. If it prevents just one sick individual from doing an act like this and a one girl does not have to go through with this then it is already worth it.

  • Rob - 2012-04-18 11:01

The culture of overbreeding with multiple woman even if they are considered to be " wives " results in a lack of control by these so called idiot parents, who are unable to feed let alone oversee their multiple offspring. The result is some of these kids slip through the cracks & have no correct parenting, with the father either having moved on elsewhere to prove his manhood, leaving the youngsters with no discipline or sense of right or wrong. This is the result of your typical dysfunctional culturally challenged upbringing. There are thousands out there who are left to their own devices & grow up to be criminals capable of the most savage behaviour.

      Rob - 2012-04-18 11:59

BLUZULU....No comment from you OR your buddy CRIS on lack of parenting skills now.

  • Lekgwakgwa - 2012-04-18 11:09

SA today is full of the youth that the dont now what the must do day by day seating on the sun playing cards smoking dug and drugs and this guys some the have everything to do the job but our government spent money for few people. so crime, corruption and rape in SA is daily thing please youth must stop and make organization that can help them crime dont build the country.

  • Grant - 2012-04-18 11:10

No suprise in a culture where 20 % of young male adults describe gang rape as fun . But andrew above you really need to understand that this does not in any way mean that ALL south african men are like that . Savage intentions are alive and well and need to be punished but in a society where having 6 wives and 10 girlfriends is an aspiration what more can you expect from the lowest rungs of that society where the desperate and dangerous hang out . They will look to their leader and think hey ..we want ours too and we will take it even if that means forcing a woman against her will for that is what our leader was once accused of doing. There are many men in this country who still see a woman as sacred ,and whose soft but firm will is to be respected alas that is not what is reported in the paper .

  • nokuthandwa - 2012-04-18 11:11

This is the rest of the story from the Daily Sun Yesterday four suspects were released but nine others between the ages of 14 and 36 are behind bars. One is a taxi driver and another is a car mechanic – the rest are schoolkids! The girl victim, who is 16 and mentally ill, is from Soweto. She is believed to have a mental age of four. The girl has been missing from her home since 21 March – before some of the video material was shot. The rapists were exposed when the mother of a teenage girl saw the horrifying pictures and confiscated her daughter’s phone. The top law enforcement officials seized the video and the hunt began on Monday afternoon. Cops drove the suspects from their different homes in Soweto to the Dobsonville cop shop where they said the suspects admitted gang-raping the girl. One boy (20) said: “I was on my way back home from a soccer match with my friends when I met the girl on the street. We dragged her to the nearest bushes where we all had sex with her. “One of us took the video and I gave her R2,” he allegedly confessed to the cops. A taxi driver allegedly told cops: “Yes, I was with her last Thursday but found her at the local shebeen. “But I didn’t rape or kidnap her. I just promised to buy a kota (bread) for her because she was hungry. HOW SICKENING!!! I hope she is found safe and alive!

      Jacqui - 2012-04-18 12:00

Nokuthandwa, now I feel even worse.Imagine having the mind of a four year old and then having to suffer this. For me, who suffered abuse as a child, this is terrible. Lord, where are the parents of these boys, what are they teaching their children?. Isn't it high time parents are kept responsible for their off springs?.

  • Aaron - 2012-04-18 11:36

NEED SHARIAH LAW. HANG THE SCUMBAGS.Western law is useless

      Jacqui - 2012-04-18 12:03

Aaron and under your Sharia law you will force a young girl to marry her rapist. You will also cut of the hand of a hungry man stealing a piece of bread. How can you want that here?.

      J-Man - 2012-04-18 12:36

Yeah. STFU with this Sharia "law" BS cr@p already. This is 2012.

  • somesanityplz - 2012-04-18 12:02

The boys should be punished till death and parents should also be punished, so we all learn how to raise morally reponsible kids...

  • Ayanda Yaya Khumalo - 2012-04-18 12:04

those boys must be kill we are sick and tired of boys who rape woman and kids after that they run away if polices and SA Law don't arrested ppl who rape kids will kill them

  • Aphiwe - 2012-04-18 12:05

I really hope that before he passes former president takes a good look at the current status of society and can find it in himself to call for the death penalty back. The reality of it as much as ppl wanna believe it was the Constitutional Court's decision to do away with it due to the newly found respect for the constitution and the right to life clause contained in there, I think as a ppl we were scared coz so many ppl had had their rights violated coz they were "terrorists" when in actual fact they weren't. Those days are gone, our society desperately needs the death penalty back. Please Comrades, Never, Never and Never again shall you wrongfully be on death row, just bring back the death penalty. Hope she is found and can sumhow move on from this horiffic and terrible ordeal.

  • Denis - 2012-04-18 12:08

Post the faces of the 7 scum bags for the world to see and for their parents' and grand-mas' heads to hang in shame...they did a shody job in raising them.

  • Samantha - 2012-04-18 12:09

this is when I have no issues with the community taking the law into their own hands- burn the bastards!

  • Tersha - 2012-04-18 12:10

these are not men! Barbarians and the people who watch it is supporting this kind of behaviour!

  • Rosie - 2012-04-18 12:32

We live in a country where there is no respect for human lives. We need harsher sentences for crimes, it is a well known fact that dockets go missing at courts, in fact it take R250 for a docket to go missing, rapists and murderers as set free or on little crimes. We also in a society where young boys do not have proper male role models, with the emancipation of women and focus on your girls, which is incredibly important, young boys do not know where they stand. Im not defending them by all means but as a society we need to start teaching boys from birth about equality, respect and dignity.

  • John - 2012-04-18 12:34

The more I read the comments the more I understand why these things are happening in our world. You can comment all you want, judge all you want, and cry all you want but until people start standing up and doing something about it, things wont change. And I am not talking about mob justice. SA turn back to God.

      J-Man - 2012-04-18 12:42

Right. Because we see the stuff god "sorts out" all around us....ok.

      Jeffrey - 2012-04-18 13:06

@@john. I support what you are saying, but let me tell you. we need God yes. But with all technology, social networking, God pretending pastors, devil worshipping in christian style is difficult. your pastor and my pastor are sinners better than me and you, we know that. to me actions are speaking louder than words.

  • Mtizozo - 2012-04-18 12:48

The girl has been foound alive as per the 702,,

  • Jeffrey - 2012-04-18 13:00

blame or no blame, man we are now out of social lines. no respect to our counterparts. while this is happening, ladies let us try not incite this to happen. we also offend this guys. but for this seven must rot in jail.

  • Elize - 2012-04-18 13:28

Now you see if these boys were at school like they are suppose to be this would not have happened.

  • vanityeverlastingbonet - 2012-04-18 14:03

    they ruined SA

  • Gavin - 2012-04-18 14:04

there is not punishment apropriate for this sort of crime. i sat through an attempted rape trial once - the judge made sure the dude realised that this was one of those crimes you just don't do, and that in the past, he would've been given the death penalty. in this new SA of ours, the emphasis has shifted from the punishment fittting the crime, to ensuring that no matter what, the criminal is protected. if I didn't know any better, I'd think this was beacuse the country is run by criminals and they are simply looking after their own. until we punish criminals apropriately, this sort of thing will continue. it is a sad day when the next generation starts off with crimes as abhorrent as this - what will they do next ?

  • Craig - 2012-04-18 14:31

I am so happy I took my family and left that God forsaken sh*thole of a country 11 years ago!

      Adrian - 2012-04-19 04:02

      Craig... I envy you.

      Garth Dean Mulholland - 2012-04-19 05:43

Craig, this is a dark day for SA, but I am glad that people like have left. If you have nothing to contribute to our beautiful country , then keep your silly comments to yourself.

  • Adrian - 2012-04-19 04:00

Wow,the SAP got off there asses for a moment.\r\n\r\nOh wait, that's only because the whole world is watching and waiting to see what South Africa does in terms of punishment being delt out to these \humans\.\r\n \r\nI personally hope our \culturally friendy\ system gets fully exposed to the rest of the world. Maybe then a little bit of true light can be shed on South Africa, \r\n\r\nThis mask that we are all wearing is slowly slipping off and there is big trouble on the way. A lot of people might disagree... So be it. Look deep down and ask yourself if you really love your fellow man the WAY YOU SHOULD. We will never get along, and no amount off \well that's you opinion\ or \I pity you\ is gonna change that fact SA is in sh1t.\r\n\r\nWhen we can ALL drop this racial and cultural BS (which will not happen to the extent it should in ernst) then maybe, just then maybe people would start looking at themselves before pointing the finger.\r\n\r\nI feel dispondent about all these situations... I don't want to have kids oneday, why? For what? To bring them into a world were black and white don't LISTEN to each other and are all to scared to say what they really want to, and were it rains sh1t everyday.\r\n\r\nI do hope that poor girl manages to find some peace amidst her ordeal... Oh and BTW, we all wanted a piece of that video didn't we. Just look at us!\r\n\r\nAs for the guilty... Not even gonna complain. Guess well hear some wonderful story about how it a white thing or a black thing... Bla bla.\r\n\r\nSleep tight South africa, and remember to lock your door someone might just break in, kill you and claim self defense\r\n\r\nOne last thing, ladies on behalf of all men I would like to apologise, not all of us are pigs. We need to start looking after our ladies guys.
