Polokwane - Nineteen officers appeared in the Sekgosese Regional Court on Thursday on charges of theft, corruption and money laundering.

The 19 are charged with assisting cigarette smugglers in exchange for money.

The men were arrested last year and were each released on R3 000 bail.

According to police, the men were allegedly involved in escorting vehicles carrying illegal cigarettes.

Nine of the officers had been stationed at Morebeng, six at Maleboho, three at Makhado and one was from the Botlokwa Police Station.

They were suspended without pay.

Police spokesperson Ronel Otto said disciplinary hearings against the 19 were still under way.

The matter was postponed to October 2.
