Johannesburg - Two high-ranking employees in the KwaZulu-Natal education department have been suspended following claims of corruption, an official said on Wednesday.

Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said: "They were informed about their suspension on Tuesday for allegations of abusing the National School Nutrition Programme."

He said the head of department had established a team to investigate all matters related to these allegations.

"We cannot say as to when the corrupt activities took place and what really happened, pending the investigation," said Mlotshwa.

"Already there is progress and more people from within and outside the department are coming [forward] with information..."
