Rustenburg - The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) has failed its workers, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema said on Saturday.

"The EFF supports the formation of an independent federation. Zwelinzima Vavi, Irvin Jim and Joseph Mathunjwa must come together and form an independent federation. Cosatu is no more, it is a faction of the SA Communist Party," Malema said.

Vavi had served as the general secretary of Cosatu, but was axed in March. Mathunjwa is the president of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union. He led a five month strike in the platinum sector last year and toppled the National Union of Mineworkers as a dominant union in the platinum mines in 2012.

Speaking at the Olympia Stadium in Rustenburg where the EFF was celebrating its second anniversary, Malema said workers should stop their subscription fee to Cosatu, as the money was used to fund the SACP and not to advance the cause of the workers.

Malema called on workers not to vote for the ANC.

He said the true ANC died after Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki were no longer leaders of the organisation.
