Councillor creates stink with mask

Kimberley - A councillor arrived at an economic development portfolio committee meeting in Kimberley wearing a gas mask, the Volksblad website reported on Friday.

Rooies Strauss, an African Christian Democratic Party councillor, was protesting against the health and environmental risk created by the local municipal dumpsite, outside Kimberley.

Strauss kept the mask on during the meeting. He told the newspaper that smoke and gas released by burning refuse at the main dumpsite were unhealthy and caused sicknesses.

He said most of the city's residents suffered from the effects of the dumpsite smoke.

"Sicknesses such as cancer, sinuses, emphysema and other related illnesses must be prevented," he was quoted saying in the report.

Strauss said he thought inmates in Kimberley's newly-built prison lived in "gas chambers" due to the smoke.

DA committee member Philip Vorster told the newspaper most councillors at the meeting were not impressed by Strauss's protest.

"Strauss tried to make a point and I would say it was both successful and unsuccessful," the report quoted Vorster saying.

Why, because some don't want to get sick from poor management at the municipality. It's pretty sick that they don't care what they are doing.

    Good man!

He made his point. Everyone noticed. And there is nowhere where it says controversial tactics are patented by Malema. The councillor should be commented for drawing attention to what is clearly a problem that affects his community. Keep it up councillor.

Yep, and he did not even attempt to set fire to anything.

I would think the poisonous fumes exuded from SA politicians would be more dangerous.

  • Gatvol Griet - 2012-10-12 13:59

Vorster, this man doesn't mince words... Ok dude, which one is it?

  • Dave - 2012-10-12 14:04

I thought it was going to say he wore the mask because the anc stank of corruption?

Dave - that as well !

Pollution is a very serious matter in SA - only an idiot ignores the looming disaster heading our way. GM food, air pollution , acid water , mismanagement of land resources , over population and never mind destructive human behaviour - this is no laughing matter. Wait until large groups of people start suffering from new diseases and we cannot find the cure then you and I will only wish that we took precautions and heeded the many warnings being sounded by environmentalists - for many years now.

Pollution is a disastrous problem - I am behind his protest action. Kimberley also has appalling waste water problems

I also fail to see why he is an 'idiot'. bit of a knee jerk response. He managed to get his point across to many more observers. If it was not for this stunt we would not even know about this issues. Wish we had more councilors like this

The DA in the Northern Cape just talk and talk and achieve nothing! I won't vote ACDP, but well done. The voting options in this province are pathetic, I will have to vote for an independent candidate next time.

I have lived in Kimberley for 9 years and many-a-day that stench hangs over the city from dawn to dusk.

Most councillors would be to ideoloiocally challenged or stupid to have realized what point he tried to make.
