Country cops get new wheels

2010-12-17 17:30

Johannesburg - Police have procured 1 385 new vehicles for use in rural areas, the ministry of police said on Friday.

"The vehicles range from high-powered 4x4s to high-tech equipped vans and sedans," said Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa in a statement.

He said rural areas where the vehicles would be used would include not just farms, but remote areas which did not even have proper road infrastructure.

"One of the focus areas will be around provision of adequate police transport in these areas."

He said research conducted by the police indicated that police visibility - whether through police officials or vehicles moving around certain areas - acted as a deterrent against crime.

"We are now beginning to deploy our resources evenly and effectively and this is our new way of doing things, innovatively and speedily."

Now you only need 1385 licensed drivers to use them as taxis and for shopping. And by the end of 2011, only 200 will probably be serviceable.....hehehe.

      Treborani - 2010-12-17 18:14

And those 200 will be stolen.......

      flummery - 2010-12-17 18:23

      meh, whiney

      Mpuma Fred - 2010-12-17 18:28

you bunch of negative wingers. When are you leaving the country as we don;t need your type around

      rodneykdc - 2010-12-17 18:43

You are very optimistic , do you really think there will be as many as 200 still working , I reckon 50 , the rest will either be on the scrap heap and/or stripped for free spares

      Ina - 2010-12-17 18:52

So true what you are saying. Hopefully there will be 200 left.

Serias - 2010-12-17 19:48 probably one of those regularly catching a free ride in the state vehicle with your stolen sheep. The truth hurts! Everything this government and its ministers touch turns to shit anyway, it was probably a purchase done through a comrade with a lot of kickbacks, that's why they actually bought it, cause that is what the ANC does.

But your still missing South Africa Serias or you would not be cruising news24, So it cant be so hot as you say where you staying!Unless your staying in a tiny room and cant buy yourself a car to use that cheap petrol and wish you where at home!

      Serias - 2010-12-18 09:53

@Robin.....I cruise all the news sites I can find, not only news24, it's called keeping up to date about what happens in the world. Maybe you should enrol in "How to use the internet" classes so you can also realise there's much more news and websites out there than news about SA and porn. I always look at news24 articles and especially the comments, it keeps on reminding me how much conflict still exists between people and shows me the level of intellectual ability certain individuals have in making stupid comments. I live in a fully furnished three bedroom, two bathroom villa by myself, with the water and electricity levies a fixed amount included in the monthly rent (paid by my company)no matter how much you use, and drive a Toyota Sequoia which I bought brand new for R270 000-00. Doubt if you know what it is, try using the internet after your classes, I don't think they sell it in SA though, too expensive for you to fill the tank. Any other questions?

@Mpuma Fred - the truth hurts does it not. Another thing - what type are you refering to ? People telling the truth or people believing all is well.

  • flummery - 2010-12-17 19:36

seriously??? we get 1385 new police vehicles and were bitching? and being all negative? seriously????? guys, this is a bit of really good news. and yes, there are plenty of other things that are bad. we all know that surely? but this is a piece of genuine good. 1385 is A LOT better than none. ESPECIALLY in the rural areas, where there is so much farm violence. I really would of thought this to be a reason to celebrate. no matter how much our politicians have failed us. peace

.....oh, and I did leave the African continent already. Now I make thousands of dollars of which your government doesn't see a cent. And I have uninterrupted electricity, clean rivers, a professional police force patrolling the streets, quality healthcare and I pay the equivalent of R2-00 for a litre of petrol. And there are not one single beggar or salesman at the intersections, and no garbage in the streets. Here black and white live together in harmony without using race as a constant excuse. So yeah, enjoy your day!!!
