Couple brutally murdered by adopted son

2012-07-25 09:10

Pretoria - A court has heard how a Delmas couple, who were desperate for a child, was brutally murdered by their adopted son and his friend.

Schalk du Plooy jnr, 18, and his friend Morné Labuschagne, 23, were this week found guilty of brutally killing Schalk du Plooy, 52, and his wife Theresa, 51, in December 2010 reported Beeld.

The brother of the murdered man, Dr Johannes Jacobus du Plooy testified on Tuesday how his brother and sister-in-law had struggled for seven years to have their own child, but eventually adopted Schalk jnr when he was a few days old.

The murdered couple were beaten with a cricket bat and stabbed by Du Plooy and Labuschagne, who are both drug addicts.

The court heard that although the Du Plooys seemed like a happy family, there was concern over the boy’s alcohol use and that goods started disappearing from the house.

Du Plooy also apparently disappeared at times and police had to go looking for him.

Dr Du Plooy, who lived in the US, said he was shocked to hear of his brother’s murder and said pictures of the murder scene and victims were horrific.

A social worker testified in court that “on that day the drugs just took over”.

Sentencing will take place this week.

Good Lord, what is this world coming to??????????

      @Clayton: YES!

      christian.denyschen - 2012-07-25 10:30

Why is it always drugs? Could it not be bad parenting in this case, think about it if you raise your children to love themselves and respect their parents I can assure you they will stay away from drugs and they would definitely not kill you. It all starts with good parenting.

      Roulon du Toit - 2012-07-25 11:23

You can't blame the parents. I still don't understand why people always say that. People learn right from wrong at a young age and some simply ignore it. Is there a record of his adopted parents murdering someone? Because unless there is your comment is unfounded, Christian

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-25 11:44

      Christian that's not true.

      alex.marshall.944023 - 2012-07-25 11:57

Christian... Good point, let's blame the victims! How dare you assume that these people who were so desperate to be parents, failed so dismally that they deserved to be killed. Nobody deserves to be murdered, especially by those they raised, vprovided for and loved. If every child felt that they were justified in killing their parents because they were treated unfairly, all hell would break loose. You live in a dream world if you think only those raised in "bad homes" experiment with drugs. I hope for your sake and your children's that you open your eyes. The "my child would never do that" parent is either in for a massive shock or blissfully unaware of what their precious little one gets up to when they are not around.

      Squeegee - 2012-07-25 12:08

Drugs. Lets stop trying to fool ourselves. Drugs are not a good idea - except if you deal or use them.

      christian.denyschen - 2012-07-25 16:20

Hell I hit a nerve here hey, ok sorry if you guys thought I blamed the parents here but just think about it Snoop Dog, Johnny Depp, Whitney Houston, Lindsay Lohan, Elton John to name a few all have admitted using drugs, so why haven't they murdered their parents? They all have drugs in common but not the same upbringing and background so saying drugs made him do its is like saying going to church made the christian an atheist.

  • peter.ndamase - 2012-07-25 09:23

Ungrateful little piece of nothing. The very same people who took you out from the street and gave you the life that you never dreamt of.

  • merven.halo - 2012-07-25 09:28

And that is why all types of drugs (hard drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, weed etc) should be banned.

      warwick.railton.7 - 2012-07-25 09:36

And what about those who don't abuse these things??..........if you banned everything 'bad' there would be nothing left to ban. Not the answer Mervin.

      jowza1 - 2012-07-25 09:49

      so should bad chefs

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-07-25 09:51

Weed is not a drug. Stop spreading lies in public.

      Roulon du Toit - 2012-07-25 11:19

As well as chocolate for making people fat and Coke and all sweets and cars for poisoning the environment, petrol because people sniff it, guns because people shoot them ... Nope, the answer is that these pieces of crap should be put to death so that there is an additional fear when thinking about murdering and raping someone else. I'm no expert but I'm willing to bet he wasn't high on weed when he killed them

      merven.halo - 2012-07-27 10:24

@ JohncarlosBiza - do you think I'll take a druggie serious?

  • mmuponisim - 2012-07-25 09:38

    Really awful

  • nikki.bustin - 2012-07-25 09:42

this has nothing to do with him him being adopted this has got to do with the incredibly sad trueth of drugs. such an incredibily sad story!!

      koo.doyle - 2012-07-25 09:46

Really Nikki? So all drug addicts / users murder their parents?

      martin.britchford.5 - 2012-07-25 09:55

im sorry, drugs do not make people do these things, piece of cr#p humans do this on drugs or sober, it makes no difference.

      alex.marshall.944023 - 2012-07-25 11:40

Oh please, just another excuse to avoid accepting responsibility for one's actions!! They made a decision to use in the first place. Perhaps Jub Jub should have used the "I was on drugs so I am not to blame for killing a group of school children" in his murder trial. Maybe the next woman to kill her husband can blame PMS.

  • donovan.botha - 2012-07-25 09:50

sad that ppl who use drugs often take from the very ppl who gave everything including there lives may they rest in peace.this government needs to open there eyes and subsadise more programs and [halfway houses]to help these addicts because it will only get worse also there is nothing for kids nowdays to do so they tern to drugs to escape reality ie no jobs etc etc.

  • ganon.nhubunga - 2012-07-25 10:19

The problem is, we are told all prisons are full of drugs, it is unfortunate he could not see & appreciate the good the parents did to him, whether biological or not, they were his parents, God given to him. Drugs are destroying our sense of ubuntu, everywhere in the world. Drug dealers are Satan's angels!!

Damns...i have no comments for this troll,. we need to involve china in this

  • josie.brits - 2012-07-25 10:43

I know this child. I knew his parents. Yes, drugs got the upper hand... but what the court failed to establish is WHY he turned to drugs and WHY he grew to detest his parents...just one small example is....on the day (and many times before) his mom, after a few wines, would tell him she shoud never had adopted him etc. What is done is done, and what he did was horrific and he should be punished for it, but at the end, there is still a lot of sides to this story!

      carla.vittori3 - 2012-07-25 10:54

Because having an abusive parent is an excuse for murder?

      Roulon du Toit - 2012-07-25 11:16

I agree with Carla. Get out and find yourself a job. Leave your parents if you must. So anytime someone is nasty to you do you have to turn to drugs?

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-25 11:53

Josie, parents aren't angels and yes here things wouldn't have been heaven either. But do you honeslty think that what you write helps anyone?. You want to tell us he turned to drugs because his parents were morons?.

      alex.marshall.944023 - 2012-07-25 12:04

Yes Josie, there is always more than one side. However there is no excuse for murder. And as someone who knew the family, fairly intimately it appears, you should not be discussing it on a news website. Rather go testify at his sentencing hearing than tell tales out of school to a bunch of strangers. Shame on you.

      thandazile.selana1 - 2012-07-25 12:06

carla, roulon & jacqui- the boy is 18 years or was 18 when he commited this so he is/was still young to see things the way you do, yes he had no right to kill

  • josie.brits - 2012-07-25 10:48

FOR THE RECORD.... Schalk du Plooy is white, like in white! Just because his hair is shaved off and he had always had a dark skin tone, does not mean he is non-white... what has colour to do with the story in any event????

Skin colour has nothing to do with it Josie. However I believe very firmly that his biological parents have a lot to answer for. His adoptive parents also had flaws no doubt and they paid with their lives. I taught a young girl who was adopted 14 yrs old when I got to know her. Adoptive parents were high achievers and civil servants. Her adoptive father left her adoptive mother when she was 4 and proceeded to have one realtiionship after another with succesively younger women - he couldn't father children. Adoptive Mom remarried a man with two high achieving older children while she was in primary where she also was a high achiever. This girl somehow got mixed up with a bad crowd and was soon addicted. Her second adoptive father and original adoptive mother got her help and she went through rehab. They did all the right things but she needed meds because of depression. She had a decent boyfriend who stood by her through all this but then wanted to move on. On the night he ended the relationship (she had celebrated a year free of drugs shortly before that ironically by bungee jumping). Her original stepdad had her that weekend and was out with his latest floozy having left her with keys and access to a gun. She committed suicide. I still grieve for that child who felt her birth mother abandoned her, her adoptive father abandoned her and her mother and she probably felt it was her fault and finally her boyfriend abandoned her. None of them were to blame as it was her own choice

Sad news all around this morning on News24. What a f*cked up country.

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-07-25 11:25

Hopefully no plea bargain with this one, He should be killed the way he killed his parents, but guess what, the Judge will have an excuse for not giving him a life sentence as he was a bad boy and the drugs and booze were the cause of the killing.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-25 11:43

Geez, one wonders where we are heading. The drugs and alcohol will get the blame.

  • Lennon Chenga - 2012-07-25 11:45

Now that @josie.brits who knows him and his family personally, has confirmed that he is white, can we move past the racial slur??? This is an ungrateful thug that must be put away!! He could have left if he didn't like the living conditions!!!

  • promise.hlako - 2012-07-25 12:30

  • Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-07-25 13:47

lennon - agreed, skin colour really has nothing to do with it, it is a crime no matter who did it. as for people saying he is white, well, he should get punished as severely as if he were black. scum comes in ALL colours.

  • phae.rayden - 2012-07-25 15:00

It would be interesting to find out if his birth mother was an addict, or his sperm donor a delinquent? An addict in the womb? Inherited genetic delinquent traits from said sperm donor? Environment is not the only consideration of behaviour, lots more info available. Disgusting scumbag should be castrated in case their type of human reproduces. In fact any human who perpetrates an act of wanton violent murder, should automatically be castrated on their first day of incarceration.

  • gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-25 17:00

Sadly not all adoptive parents are good parents and not all adopted children are good adoption material. One wonders about the mother who gave him up for adoption as well as the father who helped get her pregnant. No matter how amazing the adoptive parents are, genetics will out in the long run especially if there was drug abuse and addiction in his past. Very sad case.

  • comurray - 2012-07-25 17:41

Please dfon't blame drug addiction as these two were just plain ungreatful little murderous bastards. Let them rot in hell.
