Couple die after car crashes off bridge

Bloemfontein - A couple was killed when their car veered off a bridge between Kroonstad and Vredefort in the Free State, paramedics said on Friday.

"The driver lost control of the vehicle which careened through bridge barriers and over the side," Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said.

"Their vehicle struck the ground and overturned, rolling several times."

The woman passenger, whose body was trapped in the wreckage, died before emergency services arrived on the scene, on Thursday afternoon.

The man, who was driving, was flung from the car. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and later died.

Their ages and identities were still unknown.

Flung from car = no seatbelt. It is unfurtunate that we never get feedback on the real root cause of the accident. Why did the drive lose control, unroad worthy caer ? hit a pothole? reckless driving ? swerved to avoid a domestic / wild animal on the carriage way ? By the way, bad weather conditions such as rain are not an excuse for accidents, drivers MUST adjust to prevailing conditions and if they can't, then they are bad drivers by definition. RIP, condolences to the family.

What a f@cking chop you are dude, debating all kinds of crap when people have lost their lives !!

      Ann - 2011-12-09 13:54

All very good questions and suggestions Nosiphom. Hope we get answers and people heed your advice.

      Jeffrey - 2011-12-09 14:07

No, Daniel. You are the chop, Nosipham has asked a lot of relevant questions. We all agree that the loss of life is tragic for the family and friends of the deceased, but we should be asking these questions, so that we can find ways of reducing road fatalities.

      Nosiphom - 2011-12-09 14:42

What a chop like Daniel does not want to understnad is that if you Daniel crash because of your own recklessness and stupidity and die - its good ridance. If on the other hand it is genuinely not your fault, then we sympathise. The loss of a life should just invoke sympathy. We do not sympsthise if criminals get killed or if reckless drivers die because of their actions. We sympsthise with their families only. Hence we need to know why did the aaccident occur. I have never lost control of my car for example, hence I am curious. Why ????? So that we can place the blame where it belongs.

Sometimes you are just unlucky. I once lost control of my car on a straight national road, where the water did not drain properly.

Maybe he was playing with his GPS, maybe he was playing with her, maybe she was playing with him, maybe they were fighting, maybe we can learn out of these tragic events and equip ourselves to be better, safer and more tolerant drivers.

found the bridge with google street view..... its fairly high, no pot holes, no space for animals to get onto the bridge from the sides .... sooo .... speeding with certain weather conditions or they could have been argueing? i see alot of the times people who like to flat out their cars on a downhill straight road while its fully loaded. Condolences to the family. This could have been avoided.
