Pietermaritzburg - A couple was killed and two people were critically injured in a head-on collision in Northdale, Pietermaritzburg paramedics said on Monday.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the cars collided on Sunday night.

"The driver, a male, and front passenger, a female, of the one car, believed to be husband and wife, had unfortunately sustained very traumatic and fatal injuries and [were] declared deceased on scene ," said Banks.

A back passenger in the first car sustained serious injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle suffered multiple broken bones.

Both the injured were put on Advanced Life Support on the scene and were transported to the Grey’s Hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the accident was unclear.

"The cause of the accident was unclear..." I would say one - or both - driver/s was obviously not driving defensively. Our driving intstructor during the days when I worked in the military (as a civie, but nonetheless went for my military HD licence) wrote his own manual, emphasising on ATTITUDE, FALLBACK, SPACE. I'm afraid the first one, ATTITUDE, is sadly lacking in many of today's road-users, or rather, the attitude is: "I bought this road along with my vehicle, so get out of my way..." There is no - or very little - courtesy towards other road-users, hence FALLING BACK to create a safe margin of SPACE is virtually unknown - it's a case of - once again - get out of my way/get off my road... Need I go on???? What a pity there are no more instructors like André L - if there were, there would be far more competent drivers and fewer accidents... Get the picture?
