Johannesburg - A couple from Witbank were towed off shore after their boat experienced difficulty, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Thursday.

Rescue teams were alerted following reports of a boat appearing to be in difficulty at The Bar, off-shore of Witsand on the Western Cape southern coastline on Wednesday at 08:45.

Attie Gunter, NSRI Witsand station commander said on arrival that sea rescue craft Queen Payne found the couple had encountered motor failure of their cabin boat and they had drifted onto a sand bar.

"We pushed their boat off the sand bar and towed them safely ashore without incident and they required no further assistance," Gunter ended.
