Cape Town - A former courier driver who used an illegal skimming device to clone the bank cards of clients, was given 10 days on Monday to find R2 000 for a fine, or face a prison sentence.

Thanduxolo Mkencele, 35, undertook to sell his car when he appeared in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court, in Cape Town, before Magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg.

Prosecutor Ezmerelda Johnson told the court that in March Mkencele was fined R10 000 or four months in jail, for the illegal possession of a skimming device.

She said Mkencele was permitted to pay the fine in installments, but was currently R2 000 in arrears, and the State wished to have the suspended prison sentence put into operation.

Mkencele told the court he would sell his car in order to pay the arrears, and the case was postponed to June 18 for him to produce proof of payment.

If the arrears were not fully paid by June 18, he had to return to court with legal representation, or give reasons why the suspended prison sentence should not be put into operation, Sonnenberg told him.

During his time as a courier driver, the company Mkencele worked at would issue him each day with a device to receive card payments from clients.

However, he had unlawfully obtained the skimming device which he then used to clone clients' cards.
