Court fills for Kotzé co-accused’s hearing

2012-03-30 10:15

Modimolle - People were slowly filing into the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on Friday morning ahead of the bail application of three men charged alongside Johan Kotzé for the attack on his estranged wife.

Women dressed in pink T-shirts occupied the front row and displayed posters calling for the three, Mmapuru Peter Mohlako, Andries Paparona Sithole and Sello Frans Mphaka, to be denied bail.

They were joined by ANC Women's League members, who made up a sizeable part of the crowd in the public gallery.

"Jail, no bail for monsters," read one placard.

Jerry Nko held a placard reading: "Life sentence is a solution". However, he left when he heard that Kotzé would not be appearing.

"It is not him, it's those boys from Makapanstad," he said before handing his placard to another man and leaving the courtroom.

The men are charged with gang-raping Kotzé’s wife and mutilating her body with objects including nails, a screwdriver and a grinder, while allegedly Kotzé held them at gunpoint on January 3.

They had been hired to work in the garden of Kotzé’s rented home in Modimolle, when he allegedly forced them to attack his wife. Kotzé also allegedly killed his stepson after luring him to the house.

This is so very sad. May God be with all the victims.

What drives a man to do these things i know a woman can drive you crazy but hey bro leave her and get another one she will get her day sooner or later. I feel sorry for her she should have been killed too now she is going to live with that knowledge for the rest of her life and that is what that bastard wanted. But like i said he will get his day too he he he idiot

      Janice - 2012-03-30 10:53

Your comment is not of the highest callibre.....

      watsongeorgejan - 2012-03-30 11:13

This guy is a lying, psychotic and sadistic fraudster. All the women in his life have suffered terribly at his hands...

      Squeegee - 2012-03-30 11:53

Yea blame the woman. Voice-in-the-dark. Really dumb comment.

      wynand.bothma - 2012-03-30 12:09

I really hope you don't spawn. Wow! I have a headache after reading that garble.

      Carla - 2012-03-30 12:21

How bloody insulting. How dare you try and blame the acts of this monster on "woman can drive you crazy"? No normal person would ever do something like this to another human being, even if she did "drive him crazy".

      Janice - 2012-03-31 12:01

Wonder why I got thumbs down?????

  • Loo - 2012-03-30 10:55

Staple his f...eskin to his elbow, throw him in jail and give him the whole series of Egoli to watch. That'll teach him a lesson.

      Marion - 2012-03-30 11:01

I recently saw that a judge, in response to the victim's mother's request, ordered that the pictures of his wife and child (whom he murdered) be put up in his cell so that he would be reminded every day of his life of what he had done.

  • Marion - 2012-03-30 10:59

This is a case where justice must be the same as in the Lotter trial. Kotze must get numerous (consecutive please!) life sentences and the men who were held at gunpoint must get lesser sentences.

      George - 2012-03-30 11:27

The man who were held at gun point, HELD AT GUN POINT!!!! wooow you sound so intelligent.

      Marion - 2012-03-30 11:42

      @George - your point is?

      George - 2012-03-30 11:45

They were held at gun point like you say. Have u ever been held at gun point? do you know what it feel like? Do you really think those guys woke up in the morning and say we gonna rape some woman today? Think!!! That's my point. All of us from the grand stand we see how easy the game is and how easy it is to score till you on the field yourself.

      Marion - 2012-03-30 11:58

@George, please tell me where in my comment I said that the men who were held at gunpoint must be punished more harshly than the man holding the gun? I guess I must have smoked my socks again this morning because I certainly have no idea what you are going on about or why you found it necessary to insult my intelligence.

      George - 2012-03-30 12:29

If they were held at "Gun Point" like you say, why exactly must they be sentenced?

      Marion - 2012-03-30 12:45

Because even though they did it under duress, they still did it.

      George - 2012-03-30 13:05

So even people who gave away their keys during a hijacking should also go to prison, because even thought they were held at gun point, they still took part because they gave the criminals the keys anyway, they did it. There's a lot of people who gave away keys to the safe at gun point, people who opened doors at gun point using your reasoning this means they must all go to prison because they did it. No I respect you, this is brilliant reasoning. I like it

  • heather.scheepers3 - 2012-03-30 11:11

I think Mr Kotze has snapped and you tell me that there was nothing to make him snapp. He just woke up that morning and decided that he was going to what he did. Come on people think for yourselves. It is very sad and all these people innocent and guilty suffer until the truth comes out,

      Marion - 2012-03-30 11:20

Seems that this poor woman was not the first woman he had abused.

      Squeegee - 2012-03-30 11:55

Heather, its your type of comments that make people snap.

      Carla - 2012-03-30 12:23

      You make no sense.

  • Manu - 2012-03-30 11:18

Kotze will get less than 20 years. Wait and see. His accomplices are in trouble.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-03-30 11:25

Nah he will get life. This case is too publicized for him to get away with it. His 3 co-accused wont get as harsh a sentence. I do hope all of them get strict sentences. The monster should get a torture sentence.

      Manu - 2012-03-30 11:35

Kotze will claim temporary insanity and it will be heard as a mitigating circumstance. Add to that, historically in such cases his color is in his favour. I am putting my money on 18 years. The accomplices will not be able to claim temporary insanity and the court will not look kindly on rape/torture on command. Plus their color is against them. My bet is 25 to 30 years.

      Schmee - 2012-03-30 13:46

Manu, before you make dumb comments about race you should get your facts first. I saw your comment in the '17 years for satanic ritual killers' article. You obviously assume Lester Moody and Jeremy King are white. Catch a wake-up.

  • George - 2012-03-30 11:39

I feel sorry for the man who woke up going to work, to get their families something to eat. As much as every news 24 reader likes talking as if if they were held at gun point they were just gonna get kick that guy's ass and walk away. Last week three guy were high jacked in JHB at gun point, why didn't they kick the Tsotsi's s and w

      watsongeorgejan - 2012-03-30 11:59

But let's be honest here George, man to man, the story sounds too good to be true. If i held a gun to your head and forced you to rape someone, would you be aroused ??

      George - 2012-03-30 12:26

Adrenalin.... that's all what I can say? Man to man, if a man shoots his son in fron't of you will you still think he is joking?

  • Lerato Magabane - 2012-03-30 11:46

I dnt blv dat these boys where held @ Gun point cos i knw them n i knw they r bad news,he probably offered them money n they agreed, if they were forced they would hv gne to da police @ 1st n nt run...All 4 should b punished the same

  • ludlowdj - 2012-03-30 11:48

If they were forced to carry out the attack at gunpoint, no competent court can find them guilty.

      George - 2012-03-30 12:01

Yeeeah at least one person can think rationally. This is great news indeed. Two fat thumbs up for ludlow Dj

  • Charmain - 2012-03-30 12:07

Thoka NO the Lions might choke Why do they waste the publics money when they are guilty go past go and stright to jail

  • Murechen - 2012-03-30 12:43

I remember the ANCWL picketing because the co-accused were all "innocent and had been led astray by Kotze", I found it strange that they didn’t picket because of the crime committed against a women and now suddenly they are. I wouldnt side with them or agree to have them being present at anything that concerns me.
