Court fire: Extinguishers were broken

2012-10-23 10:07

Johannesburg - Fire extinguishers as well as a ceiling sprinkler system were out of order last Friday morning when court employees tried to bring the flames under control that destroyed both the Polokwane Magistrate's Court and the district court.

Court employees who spoke to Beeld said the fire spread and raged out of control very quickly, and that they thought it had originated in an office, according to the newspaper on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto said weekend rain had disrupted forensic investigations into the cause of the blaze.

Investigators on Monday combed the burnt-out ruins for clues, Otto said.

Only the outer walls of the building were still intact, and all computer systems, documents and sound equipment stored at the court were destroyed.

Wasn't the fire started so all Juju's evidence would be destroyed and his case delayed so he can campaign ay Mangaung?

      scouter.fourone - 2012-10-23 11:59

No Brian, Zuma would see heaven and earth moved(for once) to see the case reconstructed by 30th November, if that were the case ......

      firstseed.mbeva - 2012-10-23 14:44

So Juju must also face a charge of defeating the end of justice?

      mc.segal.5 - 2012-10-23 21:01

Probably had the water cut off due to non payment.

      art5SA - 2012-10-23 21:20

Continuously we get harassed by the state departments to comply with harsh regulations, and they don't get there house in order. maybe, just maybe, I should also become like them. Then again two wrongs don't make a right.

  • dewalds3 - 2012-10-23 10:39

Eish, Verwoerd has made da extinguisha-sistim sooo complicated!

  • blane.blandon - 2012-10-23 10:40

Private industry will get there butts kicked if their fire fighting equipment has not been serviced , lets see what happens now

      martin.gee.godfrey - 2012-10-23 10:56

Nothing will happen... It will be a blame game followed by a commission of enquiry, followed by denials and then it will be swept under the carpet as usual.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-10-23 11:10

The carpet was also destroyed in the fire.

      steve.gibson.146612 - 2012-10-23 11:21

I cannot help recalling what a good friend of mine in Kenya(Black) said to me in 1994 and I quote. "You will see, they will rule by confusion". I did not understand what he meant then but I am getting the message now!!!

      emilyjane.elson - 2012-10-23 11:38

The Apartheid Government didn't leave the Sprinklers on and didn't replace the extinguishers!! Ha ha ha

      grant.montgomery.5074 - 2012-10-24 06:16

It's a government dept so nothing will happen.

  • Pete7930 - 2012-10-23 10:40

Of course they were out of order. Everything managed by government is!

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-23 12:03

Probably only the ladies of the night?

  • martin.gee.godfrey - 2012-10-23 10:53

And we are surprised why exactly? The department of "works" is inept. Imagine if the money soent on a certain compound in Nkandla was rather spent upgrading infrastucture.

  • JohnDough - 2012-10-23 10:57

I bet Nklanda won't burn down.

      grant.montgomery.5074 - 2012-10-24 06:25

      We can but wish!

  • piet.snot.77964 - 2012-10-23 10:57

Typical incompetence by the deployed cadre of the ANC! I bet all the info on the computers was not backed-up either - neither were the documents held in fireproof safes - or electronically copied in the event of just such a circumstance.

      austin.ratcliffe.9 - 2012-10-23 11:06

I am surprised the white man hasn't got the blame for this yet,??

      mc.segal.5 - 2012-10-23 21:07

Patience Austin Some things take time.

  • earle.francis.9 - 2012-10-23 11:00

  • rosa.smit.92 - 2012-10-23 11:31

Malema wanted to make sure his case go up in flames! No surprise there. All for nothing LOL!

  • emilyjane.elson - 2012-10-23 11:34

Wow.. No surprises here and it's quite sad actually.. Not to be rude but, from what I've seen, there is none to NO maintenance done in public buildings or anything that is "provided". Logic is, that if you see things are going to ruin you fix it or maintain it to prevent complete destruction. But when you can't think or see further than your nose how the hell can you be relied on to keep things in working order?? "I just do my job and no way I'll go the extra mile!" Idiots.. Upkeep!!

  • john.p.steyn - 2012-10-23 11:55

    Eish! Welcome to mzansi baby!

  • ingrid.oberholzer - 2012-10-23 12:28

I was shocked to read this article, fire extinguishers have to be checked and certified every year or else!!!! Typical of government do as I say not as I do. Is there anything that actually functions in this country.

  • darryl.maze.5 - 2012-10-23 13:00

Just like the rest of AFRICA. Nothing works!!! Once upon a time everything was working and now nothing works and are to lazy to fix things. Surely those systems must be tested often???? Oh wait! It doesnt because they dont hire the right ppl and those ppl only want there salary at the end of the day. WELCOME TO LAZY AFRICA! WHERE YOU WANT THE MONEY BUT DONT WANT TO WORK FOR IT.

  • hsnam - 2012-10-23 15:32

    Typical African incompetence as usual

  • willem.vanrensburg.562 - 2012-10-23 16:00

They took me off for saying .... if its not stolen, then its broken... whats wrong with that...???

  • braamc - 2012-10-23 18:59

    Yo, yo yo, eish, how

  • gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-10-24 04:06

That's the African Way, unfortunately. Mindless vandalism, and a total disrespect for communal property.

  • sarel.seemonster.925 - 2012-10-24 06:36

That building was completed about 2 years ago. The developer, IDT (Independant Development Trust) awarded the construction to a BEE Company who was several million rand more expensive than the contractor who had the keenest tender. This "fire" could be an insurance scam. The IDT should be investigated for corruption.
