Court order against Tshwane land invasion

Johannesburg - Tshwane metro municipality has been granted a court order against the invasion of government-owned land in Soshanguve south, north of Pretoria, the Gauteng housing department said on Monday.

The land was invaded in November and the invaders were evicted by the municipality, departmental spokesperson Motsamai Motlhaolwa said in a statement.

The land, which consists of 800 stands, was earmarked for the development of low cost housing.

"Even following the start of the construction of houses on these stands, illegal invasion continued," said Motlhaolwa.

"The mushrooming of shacks on the vacant stands and several attempts by the municipality to remove the illegal invaders until now, proved to be problematic."

Housing MEC Ntombi Mekgwe said: "I hope this court order will help to get the message across that we will not stand by and let these lawless invasions disrupt our services to the people any longer."

Motlhaolwa said Gauteng residents could help the government by reporting illegal land invasions and the building of shacks on government-owned land.

Yeah it's terrible we know, but at the end of the day those people got exactly what they voted for, a government that uses copious amounts of tax funds on things like travel allowances, extravagant parties, big houses, cars and personal security instead of using it for infrastructure and housing to support the ever increasing masses... And come next elections those same struggling poor wet people will just vote for that same government again... There's an old Afrikaans saying that applies quite nicely here; "as jy nie wil leer nie moet jy maar voel".

It's time people realize that you have to go to school, work and earn a living. No government has ever given me a home or anything else for that matter. It is not the government's responsibility to give any member a house. You work and then earn a house!

Where do people report invations? What about developers, who somehow manage to buy city of Tshwane land on auction - dirt cheap ?

How come they can evict these people but they can't do anything about informal settlements in the suburbs of Pretoria?

That is a very good question, it is becoming a plague.

Government evicting people from government land, doesn't government say that the land has to be given to the people? Hmmmm interesting, so in other words, people can have land, just not governments land..... Ironic
