Pietermaritzburg - Clarabell the cow is lucky to be alive after a 20-metre fall into a small ravine left her stranded for almost three days.

Clarabell and her fellow cows had been herded out of their barn on the Drummond farm where they live on Sunday morning when she slipped on uneven terrain and down a 20-metre cliff in to a dry riverbed.

South African Community Action Network (SA CAN) spokesperson Andreas Mathios said when the herder saw Clarabell had fallen, he called the owner of the farm who then contacted SA CAN.

“When she fell, she landed on her hindquarters and, because she was dazed and perhaps winded, she couldn’t really move,” said Mathios.

A vet came out and assessed Clarabell and found that as she had been sitting on her hindquarters for a good few hours, she had become lame and it would be better to leave her overnight.

“She had to be rolled over every three hours during the night and there were a team of people from the farming community that actually sat and rolled her over every three hours,” said Mathios.

“The community really came together to help.”

On Monday morning, PheZulu Safari Park brought a digging machine and made a road down to where Clarabell was lying so they could hoist her out.

Clarabell was hoisted out on Monday and reunited with her calf in the farm’s barn shortly after the rescue.

Mathios said both Clarabell and her calf are doing well and it was “amazing” to see the community band together to help Clarabell out of a pickle.
