Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance has expressed their shock at the accident that left 18 people dead in the Eastern Cape, it said on Saturday.

DA MP Donald Smiles, in a statement, extended his condolences to the families of those killed.

"Our hearts and prayers are with them," he said.

The 18 people were killed when two a bus and a minibus collided on the R61 between Cradock and Graaf-Reinet on Saturday morning.

Two of those killed were children from the Cradock Primary School.

Smiles said the accident emphasised the need to pay serious attention to road safety.

"This heart-breaking incident could have been avoided. We cannot allow the unnecessary loss of lives on our roads to continue," he said.

Fourteen other people were seriously injured.

They were being treated at various hospitals in the province.

Always these goddam minibus taxis involved, they should be banned from the roads period, the life span of the average South African would dramatically increase by twenty years I'm sure

Earlier reports said a school principal was driving the minibus. So there was not a taxi involved in this unfortunate accident

      Squeegee - 2012-07-21 21:02

Themba, please keep up with the news. School BUS and Taxi. Killer drivers on the loose. Ban taxis.

Why are you all so trigger happy in thumbing @themba.thwala.98 down and thumbing @squeegee.pilot up?? What themba.thwala.98 said is precisely what was quoted in the previous story! @squeegee.pilot is reading incorrectly and shouting the odds about to the Meyerton Shool Bus crash from before..! A Taxi and a School Minibus are two different animals!

In this day and age I cant believe that reporters can get their facts wrong about the accident. I live in Cradock and this is what happend. On Saturday morning a mini bus taxi collided with the Cradack Primary school bus. The taxi was busy over taking a taxi with a trailer on a blind rise. The Principal from Cradock Primary that was driving the bus and one of the pupils were killed and 15 people in the taxi was killed. Four of the teachers from the school was badly injured and airlifted to PE and Bloemfontein as was some of the children but what they had to witness is something that no child should ever witness.

This is bloody shocking, the DA is right. One cannot believe that this sort of thing still happens in this day and age? Mamparras are responsible for this. The ancestors are very angry!

  • pierre.dupreez.58 - 2012-07-22 09:16

Ja phuti, and that attitude will resurrect those dead children and avoid future road deaths from savage Taxi drivers.......

24 farm workers died in an accident last week and no single word from DA! I am not saying DA is a racist party which caters for only whites interests, but I am just saying. They claim than in 2018 they will have majority of blacks supporting it or even win the elections but from what I can see them doing now, they don't stand a chance!!

To address comments from thabiso.s.bokwe, Tshepo Mongale and phelejoseph.lenonyane. Let us be honest - without pulling a race card. Most fatal crashes involves Taxi's. Some road worthy and other not. Unfortunately it usualy involved high quantities of lives lost. I travel approximately 100 000km a year, an on almost a daily basis I need to avoid accidents, MOSTLY because of Taxi's breaking the law. Besides the fact ONE reckless individual caused this accident, the ripple effect goes out further than just this one act of lunacy. We, the so called white South Africans, cannot understand that your innocent family can get into a Taxi, and simply allow the driver to drive in the way they do... It is just doesn't make sense to us that 1000's of people in need of this transport cannot take action against these drivers. Do you know that the small towns ALWAYS had BRILLIANT hospitals - and yet, your elected Government chose to implement A-Action, causing all hospitals to decay. We sit with a 4 Storey high hospital, and yet they could barely treat basic cuts and bruises. I'm not even going to get started on the rest of what is on my heart... I've visited the crash site today and let me tell you one thing - what happened there is unforgivable. The offending Taxi's brake marks stretches a ful 58 meters before the impact point, and then continue a further 11 meter INTO the bus... I say once more, my heart goes out to all involved, but I'm glad one reckless driver is DEAD.
