Johannesburg - A collision between two buses in Johannesburg on Friday morning left one person dead and about 100 others injured, metro police said.

"One of the drivers died, while the other driver is still stuck in his bus," Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

"About 100 people were injured. The accident happened at Jan Smuts Avenue and Lower Park [at the Johannesburg Zoo]."

Minnaar could not immediately confirm reports that the buses had collided head-on.

"The cause of the accident is being investigated."

Minnaar said Jan Smuts Avenue has been closed in both directions until the scene is cleared. Lower Park Road is also closed.

Motorists were urged to use Oxford Road instead.
