Cape Town - Two people were killed and four others injured in a single vehicle accident on the N1 highway in Goodwood, Cape Town, paramedics said on Saturday.

ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser said a Volkswagen Golf GTI veered out of control at 21:30 on Friday night and collided with a street lamp.

"When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they found that five of the six occupants had been ejected from the vehicle upon impact," he said.

Two of the occupants, one man and one woman, sustained various fatal injuries. Both were later declared dead at the scene, he added.

One man was trapped in the car with steel pinning his left leg down and had to be cut free from the wreckage, said Visser.

He was taken to the Tygerberg Hospital.

The remaining three people were taken to various hospitals in the area.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.

This is nothing new. Nearly every week there is a flattened lamp pole in the northern suburbs. Travel on the N1 out of the city any Friday or Saturday night and there will be at least one "supped up" Citi Golf travelling at a hell of a speed. Why? because there are no cops on the roads at that time. I have very little sympathy with these immature kids.

This happened just behind my house on the N1. I heard the bang, it was loud. The car was ripped in two. I only noticed 5 people that were in the car, not 6 as mentioned. Maybe there was another person I did not know of. The radio reported today that the driver, a woman was arrested for homicide and drunk driving.

Seat belts, alcohol, speed, texting etc. Sad sad sad and so preventable. I'm trying to get this message about texting while driving through to people. Ne text message is more iportant than getting to your destination safely and not putting other people's family at risk.
