Johannesburg - Two men accused of trying to sell live crocodiles were granted bail of R1 000 each by the Mankweng Magistrate's Court, Limpopo police said on Tuesday.

Nakampe David Malatji, 41, and William Madimetja Monyela, 45, were charged with illegal possession of protected game, said police spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi.

The men were arrested last week for allegedly attempting to sell crocodiles to the Mankweng community.

They were arrested after police pretended to be interested in buying some of the animals.

The two showed police where the crocodiles were being kept.

The men alleged that they obtained the crocodiles from Acornhoek.

The crocodiles were removed by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and taken to an animal sanctuary.

The men were expected to appear in the same court again on 20 September.
