West Street (Dr Pixley KaSeme Street) in Durban CBD has been closed after a standoff between about 2 000 locals and Pakistani shop owners. Watch. WATCH

Durban - A group of 4 000 people, who appeared to be foreign nationals, erected a burning barricade in the middle of Mahatma Gandhi Road in Durban's Point district on Tuesday afternoon.

A section of the group were armed with pangas.

Police later managed to douse the barricade with a water cannon.

There was a large contingent of SAPS and metro police officers at the scene. Some appeared to be engaged in a mediation effort with what looked to be the leaders of the mob.

Earlier, police fired bullets at a crowd of nearly 2 000 locals gathered in Dr Pixley KaSeme Street (West) Street after a stand-off between several Pakistani shop owners and locals.

The shop owners earlier managed to ward off looters, but the crowd of locals soon swelled and they started stoning passing cars and shop fronts.

The crowd then set fire to a parked car.

Shortly afterwards, Public Order Policing units arrived to disperse the crowd, and opened fire on them with rubber bullets.

The police's riot squad were also on the scene.
