Crowds gather for farm murder case

Griekwastad - Crowds have gathered at the Griekwastad Magistrate's Court in the Northern Cape ahead of the expected appearance of a teenage boy in connection with the murder of the Steenkamp family.

The boy cannot be named as he is a minor.

Friends and relatives of the Steenkamp family, killed on their farm Naauwhoek in the Northern Cape on Good Friday, had arrived at the court. Media were also present.

A magistrate from the neighbouring town of Groblershoop was expected to hear the case after the local magistrate recused himself.

Some media groups had applied for permission to be present in the courtroom for the boy's appearance, but it was not yet clear whether they would be allowed.

The 16-year-old boy was arrested on Tuesday in Bloemfontein.

Northern Cape farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his wife Christelle, 43, and their daughter Marthella, 14, were shot.

Police said at the time that Steenkamp's teenage son heard shots fired while he was busy in an outside storeroom at about 18:30.

He discovered the bodies in the living room and drove to the police station in town to report the killings.

He also handed two firearms over to police, which he said he had found at the scene.

Yet again its another farm murder case. Yet again perpetrated by the barbaric nation that calls itself proudly African. Yet again...

@veldt66 “…bring on those comments it’s another farmer murder….” You will be squealing like a stuck pig when there are no more farmers to feed this barbaric nation and your government has to import all our food. You will be squealing even loader when you have to pay over R200.00 for a 1kg of your favourite pap which will be GM enriched. (Genetically Modified) You can’t fathom that these farmers are the ones that feed us. Tosser.

These sad comments made by people who had to complete their school career without text books. We'll have many year to come of this as the textbookless generation grows up and speak their textbookelss minds.

If guilty then put the heartless thing forever away.

  • ronel.kotze.3 - 2012-08-23 15:13

Is it the son of the victims? I assume so, as he is also 16 years old...Then it is not just another farm murder, rather a tragic family murder by their son/brother

NOTHING stinks about this arrest. The boy very quickly washed and changed when he got to town. He 'found' the weapons on the scene. (Which criminal leaves guns on the scene after committing a senseless violent act?) He'd had a fight with his dad that morning, about leaving school and wanting to come farming with his dad. His sibling was the 'blue-eyed girl' in the family who could do nothing wrong. Which criminal would leave the money in the open safe, unless the perpetrator himself hoped to inherit that money? Let's get real here. It's another case of an EXTREMELY stressed out teenager who wasn't coping with the pressures placed on him by a society and his family. Clear and simple. (And I can bet my bottom dollar they'll prove that he wasn't taking his meds at the time.)
